What's up with the lack of coverage of the "hit by pitch?"

It seems like every controversial call during the Angels-Sox series was highly scrutinized and written about. Last night, it is my feeling the White sox would not have won that game had that call gone the right way. I feel that it's the same situation as what happened with the strike 3 call in the Angels game, but for some reason, there's no publicity on this one. Maybe I'm just missing it all, I have no clue. I'm not in Houston, though, so I have no clue how much it's being talked about there. All I know is that the highlights I saw on ESPN didn't even show the hit by pitch, which was a key turning point in the game. Talk about selective journalism...

Anyways, is this because nobody cares about the series, or is it something to do with the national media seemingly putting Chicago on some sort of pedastool? What's going on here?

it wasn't a big decision. it got the guy to first, true. but it's not like he would have been out and the inning would have been over had the ump got it right.

it's not nearly as close to a "why we lost" as it was for the angels.

True, but it is very close in other respects.....there was no guarantee that he would have walked, or gotten a hit, in fact it is about 60% that he would have made an out....

    Thus, changing the game completely.

Watching the replay a couple of times, although Dye was clearly not hit by the ball, it looked, to me, like the ball hit Ausmus' glove and not Dye's bat or body. So even without the "hit by pitch" call, Dye would have gotten a walk to first on 4 balls anyways.

The ball definitely hit the bat.

Fox showed 4 or 5 close up pictures of the ball hitting the bat.

    I'm young so I don't have to worry about that. :p :D

    I was very angry, though.

Just kidding, and you know that.

They were talking it about it on Mike and Mike this am and they both agreed that the call sucked. They talked about it for the 15 minutes it takes for me to get to work ;)

I was just commenting the other day about how the umps have really dropped the ball a few times here in the post season and luckily non of them have gone against us yet. I guess I spoke too soon.
Maybe they want instant replay in baseball?
I cant remember this many controversial calls in a single post season.

Is that a new way of saying "stepped in it?"

the ineptitude of these umps in this year's playoffs is mindboggling. although we've benefitted from these "bad" calls ourselves, it just takes away from the game. if Dye actually got hit by the pitch, you'd think the ump would notice a reaction. a 95 mph fastball to the knuckles would make anyone scream in pain. yet, there was Dye, looking lost and hoping for a bogus call that he eventually got.

but props to him for selling it like Everett did in St. louis.

It wouldn't have been a ball, because it hit the bat... so it would of counted as a foul...

Blown call, yes. Hard call to make, yes. Have the Astros had blown calls go there way, yes. Think back to the phantom tag Everett put on Molina that helped neutralize the Cardindals rally. How about Wheeler getting Posedinek or Ichmychuchy out? The ump may have contributed to the inning, but he didn't start the trouble.

Jason Collier and Darly Kyle both died very young, both from heart problems, I believe.

How much coverage did the 'tag' at second get in the Cardinals series?

    No doubt...a very fair point.

I actually think that phantom tag got more play than this phantom hit batsman.

Hey, he was joking with me, and since I'm in my 50's, which I think he knows, it was a good one. I not only not offended, I thought it was funny. What you brought up was tragic.

Dude, we're bummed enough already!! :p

Upon further review of the botched call on Pierzynski in the ALCS, this is why the calls are not going anyone's way against the Stinkin Sox.....

Have you ever been hit on the fingers when it's cold out? It hurts. I'm sure it really freaking hurts when it's a 90+ mph fastball while you're gripping a bat. If that ball hit him, he'd still be on the ground, writhing in pain.

Who knows what happens if the ump makes the right call. Maybe Dye ends up walking anyway. Wheeler was having trouble locating the stike zone at that point. Maybe Wheeler does make his pitch and gets out of the inning. Maybe Dye hits the homerun himself to tie it up. The point is, the game is not about the umps. It was not his job to play a part in the outcome by taking it upon himself to make a call that he clearly couldn't make on his own. He should have asked for help. He should have found the ball. He at the least should have realized that Dye wasn't in any sort of pain.
