Everyone looks at the past two offseasons and are screaming that all the teams are crazy, but if you look at NBA just 7-8 years ago, before the lockout, contracts like the ones that've being handed out is pretty much run of the mill. That's before even considering the inflation.

Since the last CBA and the creation of the "max", fans suddenly feel that if guys like Lebron, T - Mac are only making the max, why should guys like Joe Johnson, R. Allen and Redd get the max? But if you look at it in another way, if there was no such thing as the max, there would be no question you would offer guys like those the max. Look at the contracts that were handed out pre lock out and after, guys like Johnson, Redd and Allen are actually making their market value (Ray might even be slightly below), it's just that the max keeps guys like T-Mac and Lebron from getting their market value ( 20M+ /year deal).

By creating the limit and the term max, Stern and the NBA owners have accomplished the psychological trick of making the fans feel that players are overpaid for their value.

So what? I fail to see why that is a genius? Is it good for us to dislike the players 'cause they're overpaid? What?

It's genius because the fans have bought into the new "value" system the NBA has put in place. They side with the owners, only wanting to pay "max" money to superstars, when the CBA actually allows for teams to afford 1-2 max players per team.

Look at it this way: Tim Duncan is one of the best, if not the best, big men in the league. He should be paid similar to what Shaq and KG are making. But Shaq has a ridiculous grand-fathered deal, and makes twice what Timmy does. KG used to have a massive deal too, but he agreed to a cut when he resigned to help his team. Here are the numbers from Patricia's site:

Players earning $7 million or more
    1. Shaquille O'Neal (Mia) ..... $27,696,430

It isn't necessary good for the fans to think the players are overpaid, but it sure comes in handy when things like the lock out comes into the picture. It definitely allows the owners to pay below market value for today's players, especially the superstars.
