Steely Dan - named after a steam powered vibrator from an obscure novel.

Really? My opinion of their name just went up. We are all reeling in the years. It's what humans do. As an aside, we used to have a beautiful female black Lab named Aja. She reeled in her years and went to the Doghouse in the Sky.

I was waiting for a Mookie Blaylock (pre-Pearl Jam) mention! Terrible name, and an ok basketball player

Not legend. Actually true. Their first album "Ten" is named after Mookie Blaylock's number.

I was focused more on the LP. Speaking of Burroughs, a band who borrowed from his work for the name of the group were The Soft Machine. They opened for Jimi Hendrix at the Music Hall in February of 1968. Jimi played two shows. It was wonderful. The Soft Machine weren't bad, either.

My mind is reeling right now. I had no idea/had forgotten that Mookie was, at least for a time, Jordan’s doppelgänger. What the hell is this?

Genesis, because you can't try and name your band after Van Halen.

They promised nothing but the possibility. Maybe they just thought they were giants, Lilliput-style?

    Beware the Green Monkey

They broke up after their lead singer in the 2nd video, she won the UK lottery and retired...

Ben Folds Five (there were only 3 of them)
The Police (greatest band in the history of the world, but yeah....kind of a dumb name)
ZZ Top (I've heard it was a reference to BB King)

    Milli Vanilli

    The worst name
    +
    worst "band"
    +
    worst outcome

They represented a classic lose-lose on a global scale where nobody came out unscathed. Truly tragic on all levels.
