What's the job market like in Houston right now? And by this I mean the "atmosphere" of it. I live in Ohio right now 1 hour from Detroit. It is NOT pretty up here at all. My father is out of work and is considering going back to houston where we lived for 10 years to survey the market. Is houston staying afloat during these tough times?

I think it depends on what type of job you are looking for obviously, but for the most part I think the market here is fairly strong. End of the year though is not a good time to find a new job though, no matter what you do. Most companies wait until the first of the year when they have their new budgets available.

QFT. If possible, wait until late December to start looking/applying, and don't expect anything to happen until January.

i've already heard of major oil and engineering firms laying employees off and shelving/canceling new projects

houston may fare better than most cities, but things aren't going to be rosy anywhere in the short term

Depends on what kind of job you're looking for, but I don't think we'll see the full impact of job losses for a few months. More layoffs to come more than likely.

I'm not going to mention the company I work for, but we have been a major pipeline company for a looooong time, and over the last 4 weeks, we've had some major layoffs, cutbacks, and project cancellations.

So for the OP question, the impact is coming to Houston, no one has a clue for how long and how hard.

woah woah... I thought we were talking about jobs here.

Anyway, I do know quite a few companies that have job freezes. None that are laying off yet. I read an article stating that the oil companies are not going to layoff because they got burned back in the 80s with people switching professions and students changing majors.

My brother got laid off last week, he worked for Ion who build technology for Oil comanies and what not to survey for oil and gas. That's was pretty cold blooded laying him off right before the holidays. Like you guys say, finding a job is hard this time of year. I'm not even sure that his severence lasts til the end of the year.
