    I bought a 2004 4x4 f150 last night. I talked the dealer down from $13,900 to $11,200.

After he called back with offers of $450, $350, and $325 a month, I simply told him that if he could bring my monthly payment to $275 a month, I would get the kids up from dinner and go sign for the truck.

    Needless to say...

Congratulations on haggling the dealer to achieve your desired sale price. However, one cannot help but notice the discrepancy between the monthly payment amount and the sale price. Perhaps the dealer was increasing the duration of the loan as wells as the sale price?

I can't deal with car salesmen. I've never purchased a car on my own (25 years old, still driving hand me down from parents), and the last time I went to look at a used car, the salesman was so unreasonable I just got up and left.

The dealership was selling the vehicle above blue book price and the salesman insisted it was a great deal. Additionally, when I kept telling the salesman that I only wanted to talk about the price of the car, he kept wanting to negotiate interest rate, down payment, and monthly payment.

Isn't getting the payments to fit the worst thing you can ask a dealer to do...UNLESS...you're getting the same low interest rate and months to pay it off?

Obviously you got the price down $2,700, but what was the total difference going to be after it's completely paid off?

exactly, focus on the cost/interest rate, not the monthly payments.

Salesman love someone wondering what they can get for $300/month

The total amount financed included tax title license and fees.

That's the epitome of a salesman using the "four square" method of car sales.

Maybe I went about it wrong, but I got myself the truck I wanted at the price I wanted. Now I can hunt to refinance at an even better rate. Is that a skewed way of looking at it?

What's funny is that my roommate told me about the "four square" method before I went to the dealership. What is the first thing I notice the dealer do when we sit down? Pull out a piece of paper and draw four squares on a piece of paper. I almost called him out on it, but I waited to see if he'd be reasonable...he wasn't, he insisted on negotiating all these other terms, so I just left.

Why were you negotiating by monthly payment instead of price? Ideally you should go in with a credit union quote and ask them to beat it.

I bought my 2006 F150 brand new for $16,999 with a window sticker that read $27,871. The car sales man didn't want to shake my hand afterwards.
Oh yeah, I put $1000 down and pay $347 a month.

I figured at $275 for 48 months, I would end up paying, $13,200 over the course of the note. At $11,200 +$924 tax + $215 in license/trasnfer/office fees, the total for the truck itself is $12,339. I ended up paying $861 in interest over the course of the loan.

It seems like a good deal to me. What am I missing?

Using this car loan calculator, the interest rate comes out at 3.3%

Wow. Why would he sell that truck if he was going to be upset about it?

Used cars have the most mark-up. I used to work R&S and man the used cars were marked-up at least 5K higher than what they got them at trade-in. There is usually a lot of wiggle room for used cars when haggling.

Well it's actually more complicated than that. Turns out they ran an ad for the truck in the paper. I called and had them verify the stock # and told the nice lady to hold the keys until I got there. The sales man tried to show me another truck he claimed was the one for sale (V6 sigle cab).
When I calmly pointed out that wasn't the truck in the add he claimed it had bee sold just a few minutes before I arrived. (Oldest trick in the book!)
We went inside and I asked for the saleslady I spoke to over the phone and to his surprise she had the keys to the truck( Amazing! It wasn't sold!). He wasn't happy, I then showed him the add and sales price. After 4 hours of back and forth his sales manager pulled me into his office offered me sales job and signed off on the sale.

Sounds like you got very good rate. But as a rule, I never bring up monthly payment, and negotiate only on the selling price.

Like the guys were alluding to with the 4-square, the dealer will always try to screw you some way. Either with the financing, trade-in, price, or extras.
