Basically...Linux comes in different, what they call "flavors". Mandrake and RedHat are made by different companies and communities. But they all have in common the Linux Kernel (coming in different versions non concurrent with the flavor's version...meaning RedHat 9 doesn't use Linux version 9)...which are basically the instructions for the processor.

I believe that they also have the same file system...EXT (i believe), which is the where the OS stores and retrieves data...Windows versions being the aforementioned FAT OR NTFS.

Yeah, that's what I mean though. For instance, they all say something to the extent of "X Linux is a product of the unified efforts of many people worldwide" or "X Linux came about alongside the need for an easier end-user experience," et cetera, et cetera. But what are all these people and all these companies doing? I see virtually no difference between their versions: all use the same Kernel (sometimes with modified headers and modules and blah blah blah), all use X Windows, KDE, gnome, the same command prompts with the same UNIXish commands...what is the essential difference and why should you choose one over the other?

I'm gonna try to start using Red Hat now simply because it's a more common distro and it's got RPMs made specifically for itself, unlike Mandrake where even with RPMdrake you still have to continuously compile the kernel every time you go to install a program.

PS - I'm a relative newbie to the Linux thing, so these questions are genuine.

mar1juana and Hemp are both variant strains of the plant Cannibus Sativa. This versitile plant has been cultivated world wide throughout history so that it's various commercial properties have been maximized. Hemp is usually considered those strains that produce fiber stocks used in ropes, jutes, and fabrics. mar1juana is usually those strains that maximize the psychoactive compound Tetrahydrocannabinol, THC, intended for the sillification of otherwise overly serious huminoids.

    not necessarily true.

I have used Drake from time to time...and have never had to recompile the kernel to install new programs...

what scenario required you to do that?

basically...the difference between distros has to do with the way that they store files...there is supposed to be a common directory setup so that programs will install into the same directories no matter which distro you use, but it doesnt always work out that way.

Mandrake is based on RedHat...any rpms that will work for RH should work with Drake....but I would only do that if I couldnt find a Drake-specific version..(easy clue...it has 'mdk' in the name)

the diffferent versions are different in what tools they provide...and what software they provide with the OS.

You are correct that under the surface, it is all the same....same kernel, same basic command line programs, same GUI(KDE or Gnome)

As of now, I am using Suse 9.1

Very nice...has some great tools for configuration...

btw.....the Linux file system used to be exclusively ext2....now it uses either ext3 or Reiser...which is a journaling file system.
