Does it only tell you what is currently playing, or does it log the song titles as well? More often than not, if I am hearing a song on the radio that I want to know the name of, I am nowhere near an internet connection.
I remember when Sony's eMarker did this a few years ago. You just carried it around on a keychain and pressed a button when you heard a song you liked. You then take it back to your pc whenever and plugged it into a little USB adapter cradle and it would tell you what songs were playing then. Unfortunately the eMarker gadget died... My Neuros MP3 player does the same thing. What's cool about it is you can record some other stereo playing something using the Neuros and then connect the Neuros to the Internet, and it can figure out what song it was based upon a 30 sec. clip. Pretty sweet.
Too bad they only list the big chains - Clear Channel, Radio One, etc. It is cool but I wish they had the smaller stations as well. I guess those don't list their playlists somewhere where they could easily be grabbed and posted. Thanks for the link. That is pretty damn cool.
But what is odd about that is 93.7, The Arrow, a Clear Channel station, is not listed. Not that the Arrow ever plays a song I wouldn't know the name of.
I don't think that's what's happening. I think this is the same technology (or, at least, it was marketed as StarCD as well) that was doing something like this about 3 years ago. If so, they've got software that analyses the audio that's being played and figures out what song it is. Then, the original idea was that you'd call *23 (get it?) on your cell phone and buy that album. At least in Nashville, the stations that are listed aren't just the big chains -- there are local AAA, modern rock, top 40, CCM, and hip-hop stations listed. However, they don't recognize *all* the songs played by those stations -- during the AAA station's all-request lunch hour Friday, they could only pick out a handful of songs. I'd guess that the wider playlist is the real reason that the college stations, oldies, classic rock, etc. aren't listed here.
StarCD and *23 are the same thing. I dont think they offer the phone service anymore, it's been years since I've heard anything about it. While StarCD is nice, they're notorious for screwing up the order of the songs played, which pretty much defeats the purpose od it's function. When I worked at the late "Hot 97-1" here in town, I remember looking at our log and comparing it to StarCD's log. While we were a Hip Hop/Pop station, I would occasionally see songs we never played from Lynard Skynard and Tim McGraw and even some Spanish songs. If the station you're listening to is owned by Cox Radio, go to their website. They have a 'Last Songs Played' feature that wil take you back further than StarCD. Of course the drawback is that only Cox owned stations offer that feature. Hey, DJ JFIVE, why did 97.1 go off the air exactly. Most people i knew thought it was better than 97.9. One day i flipped it on and there was classic country. I didn't see that coming.
I believe it went off the air because of the lack of ratings. 97.1 got about a third of the rating that 97.9 did, and The Box has a stronger signal in Houston. I thought 97.1 was better also, but I usually dont listen to rap, more Rock like The Buzz and Rock 101.
