Being from Australia, i'll probably never see an NBA game live (although my future plans (dreams) include a trip to NY where hopefully the rox will be in town). SO what was it like? what type of game was it (playoff?reg season?). I'm really curious..fill me in!
I went to the 3rd game of the playoff series between Houston and Mavericks. That was my 1st live pro-sports experience. The atmosphere was great, I never shouted that loud in my life. You just can't feel the noise on TV. You have to be there to experience it. And it's nice to see the power dancers up close. Too bad Houston lost though.
ever had moments where all logic and sanity just went out the window and in comes the yelling, the profanity and all of a sudden you find yourself looking stupid? yea that's all apart of being at a game and i love it. it doesn't even go for Rockets games. UT games, Astros game....the atmosphere just pulls you in.
It's surpisingly.... humanizing. What I mean by that is... when you watch the game on TV, the players almost seem cartoonish - as if they aren't real. And when you see them live, it's almost a let down becase you realize that Tracy McGrady is just a guy. An exceptional athlete, don't get me wrong, but it's as if you see them not as a basketball superstar, but as a human being. And that changes the game. It's different on TV to watch a player do a huge dunk - you almost expect that from the cartoon-like image you see on TV. But when you see it happen live, and watch that "normal guy" just a few feet in front of you throw down a tomahawk dunk, well that's not something you expect a real human to do at all. It's actually quite superhuman, and appears almost supernatural. Seeing it live makes the great plays electrifying.
There really are no words to truly describe the difference between watching on TV and being at the game. You just HAVE to experience it once in your life, at least. It's really kinda mindblowing at first.
the court is all polished up and looks real bling bling....u almost want to get a sleeping bag and just pitch camp on the hardwood and roll around from baseline to baseline all nite (with a couple of the cheerleaders in the bag, too)... also, Yao looks REALLY BIG in person...
I have to say that the difference between live and TV is less in basketball than it is in baseball. I love going to see the Rockets, and it is certainly better than on TV (otherwise I wouldn't be dropping $50 bucks). That said, going out to a MLB game is almost like watching a different sport than watching an MLB game on TV. Maybe it is because the court is petty small, and unless you have really good seats, it has kind of an overhead television shot feel to it. The baseball field just expands out in front of you. I love going to live sports though. I highly recommend checking out a game if you make it stateside, even if the Rockets aren't playing. I would love to see a game at Yankee stadium.
i like going to the astros game because it just seems more relaxed and fans get more excited. rockets games just seem dead, until come playoff time...er or maybe not. NLCS game 3 was wayyyyyyy louder than game 3 of the rockets this yr. but then again the stros won game 3 and rox lost theirs...
Being at an NBA game is awesome, where you're standing up the whole time and yelling til your throat hurts, chanting and clapping and...wait, I guess I got that confused with a UT football game. A Rockets game is where you're the only one cheering and the people behind you tell you to please sit down in the fourth quarter because they can't see.
Thats if you sit in the lower bowl, if you're in the nosebleeds everyone is usually standing up, but thats just my experience. A Rockets game is not the only place that happens, last year at Game 4 of the NLCS, when the Astros were starting to pull away the atmosphere was electric and my friend and I were standing cheering as loud as we could, and some J!@#-Off has the nerve to ask us to sit down, to which i turned around and told him get off your @ss and start cheering.
Going to live NBA game is an awesome experiance! Just being able to see all the action happen in front of you and seeing the true speed at which the game moves is just something that must be expericanced. You won't be dissappointed when you go.
Well, it all depends on when you go. 1993-1997 - awesome experience 1998-2004 - great remedy for insomnia 2004-present - awesome again
I would say sitting in the lower bowl is great. You really get to see how big the players are and how fast the game is. Sitting in the upper level sucks..I'd rather watch it on TV. There is always that one yahoo who is the only one standing and cheering and you cant see around
I would disagree with the baseball comments. I've been to both and there is a big difference: At the baseball games, you still sit a lot farther away from the players than at the basketball game. Since the NBA stadiums are much smaller than baseball stadiums, I get a much more "up close and personal" feeling at the basketball stadiums.
depends on whether its playoff or regular season game. if you go to one of the 82 regular season games...they're boring. my father and i had season tickets back when the Rox were winning championships. regular season games were dull. they lagged on. you could see that there was not much urgency among the players. you could see horry walking up and down the court. then the playoffs came. then it mattered. then it was a blast. very intense. very fun. but in my opinion...there is no sport that has a more boring regular season than then NBA. i believe that's a function of allowing too many teams in to the playoffs. when more teams in your league make the playoffs than don't, the accomplishment doesn't mean as much...and there's no reason to have an 82 game schedule when that's the case. that's my biggest beef with the NBA.
1993-1997 - awesome experience (Dream era) 1998-2004 - great remedy for insomnia (francis era, yuck) 2004-present - awesome again (tmac era)!!
Let me see 93-97 Rockets wre doing great 98-04 Rockets were mediocre 04-present McMing Dynasty I'd say you're right. If you like professional basketball though, a NBA game in person is an awesome experience (especially during the intense playoffs). The skills are so far and above the college game. Dunks are unbelievable, passes are awesome and 28 fott 3 pointers are not uncommon. It's special
Am I only one that thinks the Rockets PA announcer kind of ruins the experience? "LOUDER....!!!" He's annoying
