i know we need help rebounding and everyone would love a power forward that could rebound and be an outside shooter to spread the floor. with that said who are free agents next year that we could realistically sign?

Reggie Evans, and maybe Donyell Marshall. Evans can probably be had for the MLE or less. Marshall will probably get more than the MLE, but you never know.

i'd love to have Evans, but Seattle probably won't let him get away...they'll lock him up for more than he's worth and more than we can afford..

We tried to get PJ Brown w/ Wesley, but NO wasn't having any of it. Last I heard was that he was a FA after this year.

Also, Stromile Swift's name came up.

Seattle has a lot of guys that are higher priority--starting with Allen and Radmonovich. They might not match on Evans.

The most viable vets are Donyell or SAR, SAR probably through a S&T with Portland after he threatens to leave them for nada unless they facillitate a trade.

Swift might be attainable after all as well (if the market above the MLE for him has soured, which is possible). Maybe Chandler through a S & T.

I would love to see Reggie Evans in a Rocket Uni. Danny fortson wouldn't be so bad either. If i were gonna throw big $$$ at the 4 then id look to see if a sign and trade could be worked for Tyson Chandler... or Troy Murphy. But I would steer clear of Twiggy Swift.

Maybe CD can take a flier on some draft busts and see if JVG can turn them into decent players. ie Skita and Diop.

If we could get Troy Murphy that would be a serious coup!!

I seriously doubt that Reggie Evans has more game than Murphy. For anyone out there as old as me, and also familiar with the old ABA and early years of the Nuggets, Murphy reminds me big time of Dan Issel. The man is a hall of famer and scored more than 20,000 points. He could shoot from anywhere on the court and played big inside.

As for others, I say S&T for Chandler, and if we're not prepared to go big dollars then Fortson or Swift.

If the Suns win it all then the League will seek to follow their mold and everyone will be seeking speed and shooting over size. With that in mind Swift and some other guys that can flat out run would be ideal.

Murphy is signed for the next 6 years.

Fortson has a player option, and he's doubtful to let 6 mill slip away to test the open market.

Swift is a curious case. This was prime time for him to cause his market value to balloon- instead he sits with a variety of questions surrounding him. The good thing I suppose, he hasn't played his way out of our price range.

Evans is unattainable, imo. We would be nuts to hand him a full MLE deal, and Seattle would be nuts to not match a reasonable offer for him. Seattle has to deal with other guys, but they can let the market determine Evans' value and sit back and match. If you want to steal a guy off Seattle, look at Antonio Daniels (not that he solves the 4, though he'd make a nice backcourt mate to Sura). They have Ridnour starting, and obviously Jesus Shuttlesworth takes priority in the backcourt.

Donyell Marshall could be had for MLE dollars, but I just don't see him as Van Gundy's type of player. He doesn't seem to have a chip on his shoulder.

The guy I look to right now is Shareef Abur-Rahim. He's Juwan Howard deluxe, basically. Younger, better scorer, better rebounder, more athletic. He ought to want to play for a winner, and there aren't that many winning teams out there with as wide a hole at the 4 slot as we have. I can't really see teams offering him above MLE, nor can I see him returning to Portland's turmoil and having to battle a 23 year old 20-10 guy in Zach Randolph for the starting spot. Our plethora of expiring contracts make for some reasonable S/T options with Portland as well.

    NIKEstrad -

thanks for the clarity on Murphy. I do like his game though.

I agree that SAR seems like a good fit, but one has to ask why he seems unable to fit in somewhere???? What's the chemistry issues with him? His game and status maybe ideal for us, but if he's a cancer in the locker room then there's no way JVG would even consider bringing him in.

Maybe Evans could be an option. How's his outside shooting?

I take it you haven't seen him play. He makes Clarence Weatherspoon look like Reggie Miller.

    LOL!

Raheem would be a perfect fit for us I think. The guy has a solid jump shot. He is and efficient reb and defender as well. He is a veteran in the league, but still young enough not to break down at the end of the year.

If Shareef decides to come to Houston for only the MLE, we'd have a damn good team next year. It'd definitely be a "pick your poison" team: two more-than-solid big men, and a superstar guard. Any one of those three could go off for 30+ each night.

He's slightly over the hill, but a good rebounder and has a solid 18 ft jumper. He has pretty decent post moves too, giving us another low post threat when Yao's out of the game. He's a bit lacking on the defensive end, but JVG's scheme should more than make up for it.

    That said...I'd say there's a 0.001% chance of it happening. :p

if shareef does come here i think he has a few good years left. he is only 29 years old. and i would guess that maybe he has lost a little interest in bball because he has never been on a good team. hell im not even sure that he has been on a team that has had a winning percentage.

so maybe he could and would want to come here and get some of those wide open looks, and have some renewed passion for the game.

    heres hoping. :) :D ;) :p

That's what I'm hoping as well. After several years playing for a losing cause in Atlanta, he moves to Portland to be in Zach Randolph's shadow.

He's already had his six year near-MAX contract. Now, he probably wants to play for a winning team where he can actually contribute.

With Biedrins and Cabarkapa showing promise it is very reasonable that the warriors take expiring contracts and a 2nd round pick for Murphy, especially after the ludicrous contracts they gave to Fisher and Foyle. Only problem with Murphy is that he is one of the worst defenders in the league... and definitely not a shot blocker. Really not the protector we need next to Yao.

    We need Turiaf (draft).

Uh the words Seattle and inside game are complete opposites... why are we aching for their inside game? Let them keep their trash. Trades and draft or nothing brother.

Except Stro but we know that aint happenin
