What OS are you running? I've run final cut pro on a mac before and that is the best I've used so far.

How do you guys own professional editing software? Those cost hundreds. I found myself in a situation needing video editing a while back, spec. with timeline management, typesetting etc., and I found, unfortunately, that there's just no free (opensource or freeware) substitute to pro video editing software for this function akin to GIMP with Photoshop (I eventually ended up just doing a powerpoint).

I did get to try out several programs that were able to do more advanced stuff that Live Movie Maker. If you want to just add timeline management, the old Windows Movie Maker bundled with Vista and earlier has it (http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=34). If you can afford to try Linux, your options open up. I tried OpenShot in Ubuntu Linux (http://openshot.org/) which is more advanced that Live Movie Maker.

This is what I used to use.

On my Mac, I usually use Final Cut Pro.

I was using it as part of a program at my school, so I'm sure they got it at a discount. If you're a student or know someone that's a student they will sometimes give student discounts on expensive software. Not a bad idea to check if you're looking to buy a new program.
