After massive persuastion, I think my dad is leaning toward buying me a car simply because he does not have the time to go run small errands. Anyways, he wants to buy a truck for me (since he could also use it for his construction business) and I obviously am against it. Anyone know of any good sporty or SUV cars that I can get for 5k-10k?

Here's some that I like or have considered:

    Mitsubishi 300GT
    Mitsubishi Eclipse
    Pontiac Trans Am
    Pontiac Firebird

    do they make Tercels anymore?

edit - or you could get an early 90s Volvo. Those things are the Karl Malone of cars... sturdy, never break down, built like a tank, and last for 15-20 years.

my first car was a 1990 Volvo 240GL (of course I got it in 1990, so it was brand new)...

If you don't care about looks or performance (which you do since you are in high school) youcan get a kia for under 10K brand new. It might not be the best car in the world, but I'd be new and have a warranty and probably get good mileage. Good luck in your search.

I would stay away from Mitsubishi as they have poor maintenance records.

Are you planning on taking your car to college? If not, I'd say let your father get a truck since you'll only use it for a couple of years.

Civics are nice. Look good and used ones can be found around 10k.

Get a stationwagon, they're the coolest!

I suggest something from the 80's, use the rest of the money for gas and insurance.

Perhaps you would like to bid on the B-Bobmobile?

I agree with Don, well other than the station wagon part. As I just posted in another thread, I had a '88 Taurus in high school. I ended up wrapping it around a tree. Get some experience in a lunker and then get a better car later after you wreck the **** out of it. Just walk out of it without a scratch like I did. ;)

I plan on only having the car for 1-2 yrs and then switching up, but still, you know how HS is. Those 1-2 years u can tell people you got a Volvo or you can tell people you got a Honda. I'm gonna safely assume more people would ride in your Honda then ur Volvo. :p Anyone know of any SUV's? I like those Explorers but with the tire problems and all, I dunno.

As for this contraption u like to call the "B-Bobmobile," I would decline politely because I already have such a piece of machinery acquired. I call it the "Old School 85 Caddilac Fleetwood Brougham with a broken side and front window, no radio, no heat, no tailight and broken steering wheel":D

Get something older that still runs well. With a little bit of looking around, you can find a bad-ass car from the 70s for under 3 grand and under 100K miles. My Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme only has 88K miles on it, and I have put about 15 of those grand on myself. It runs FABULOUSLY, is reliable, easy and fun to drive, fun to ride in and it gets lots of looks. I even had someone leave a note on my windshield offering to buy it :)

You could easily buy a 2000-2001 Ford Ranger for around $7-8K. I've got 98 4x4 Ranger and its never been in the shop. Runs real well, and good insurance value.

Get somethign like a 99 Chevy RS Cavalier. I got a 2001 camaro for graduation, but damn I miss my RS Cavalier! CD player, sun roof, power locks/window, keyless entry. I had lots of good times in that car.

Me too dude. In 1989 I got my first car...a 1984 Olds Delta 88. It was awesome. My Dad got it for me and I was so grateful to have a set of wheels. There were kids at my school driving brand new BMWs and such...but I loved my car...I was so happy to have it.

My first was a Delta 88 too! A 1976, battleship of a car. It rode like a cloud, had bench seats front and back, and you could pack about 8 people in it and head for Galveston in the summers! Man did I love that car. Would never be able to park it here in SF though. :(
