Suppose the strict minutes restriction is a career long thing. What is a fair per-year salary in that case? If his minutes are 2/3 of the minutes one would expect fairly durable, 36 mpg star, then perhaps a fair salary would be 2/3 of the max. So somewhere in the 11-12 million range?

If he is limited to 24 minutes for the rest of his career then I'd assume his number would be right around 12ppg and 8rpg which say 6-8 million per year but considering his massive size and the space he takes up, I'd up the total to 8-10 million.

I think another question would be, is Yao a starter or backup? Should the team use the money for a starting center that can give you starters minutes or continue doing the center by committee thing?

It depends on how much revenue he brings to the Rockets organization.

You should wait after the season is over to analyze a fair contract for Yao. Right now this thread is beyond dumb. What if Yao playing time is NOT LIMITED in the playoffs? And as a result of that we go deep? What if a freak accident happens in the playoffs? What if other teams are willing to over pay for a rare 7' yet alone a 7'6" center which the league lacks?

The truth has yet to be told! Mostly because no one knows the truth at this point of time. Yao Ming will start out cautiously and will build confidence.
At first he will be very restricted but the coach should ease up as the medical reports continue to be positive and Yao Ming is willing. That is to say that the team will keep close reigns on the stress of his game and will try to ensure that Yao is improving throughout the whole season, with playing to full capacity in the playoffs as their goal.

If The Management/Coach plays any tricks/games ala McGrady on Yao Ming I feel sure he will demand the maximum or free agency.

Other wise I believe that Yao will get tested to his full capacity before any offer of a contract renewal is made and rightly so.
He should be paid as much as he is worth not a penny less or a penny more! :p

Wow wow wow, Come on durvasa it is way to early to tell. We don't know anything yet. Yes, he is cleared etc but we don't know what he is gonna be this this year.

Can he really contribute to this team, can he handle all the expectations after missing a year? It is too early.

I don't wanna jinx anything, but he may suffer another season ending injury. God knows it.

But personally I'd say 10 million a year is too much.

Coming off of 5 straight years of season ending injuries yet 25% voted for max?
    you've gotta be kidding me....

6-10 mil more likely if he manages to stay healthy this year

He'll get the max and here's why, there are going to be just as many salary cap teams in 2011 as in 2010. Someone is going to have space to offer him a max deal, and if someone offers him $100million, you think he would turn that down and sign with houston for $60million?

Assuming he has no injuries, he'll get the max.

    wanna bet?

we're talking about a guy who IF (and that's a HUGE IF!!) he stays healthy, he'll be playing 24 minutes a game AT MAX!!

sorry, but that doesn't bring max dollars.

I think you would have to see based upon production.

My first thought is in the $10-$12m range, but that may be too high.

So, I would say in the $8-$12m range just to be safe......if he is very productive during his limited time on the floor.

We also have to consider the new CBA agreement which will most likely lower the Max Contract. NO WAY Yao gets the MAX, just no way, even if he plays an injury free year at 24 min per game, I can not see a team hitching 100 million on a guy who is limited at 31 years of age.

10-13. Based on incentives I'd allow it to go higher.

We owe it to the Big guy for playing him WAAAAY too much in the JVG era.

Yao is too skilled, too big and too much of a global draw to get him for less.

That's just a limit that rockets have placed on him artificially, if he does fine this season, teams are gonna throw the max at him.

You think New York or Chicago won't want to max him out?

The smaller teams will want him just for the exposure that he brings to their team, NJ, Memphis, Sacramento, Golden State, Indiana, Cleveland, Toronto, Detroit, Clippers, Twolves, OKC, Phoenix, Washington all have at least one Max slot.

You think that NONE of these teams will throw the max at YAO when he becomes a free agent?

There might be one, but I think the vast majority will be scared off....but Sterling of the Clippers would, he just wants the $$$$ doesn't care about winning....

And if Yao is on his team, he makes more $$$$......

nearly half the NBA has max slots in 2011, there are actually WAY more teams with cap room in 2011 than 2010, and WAY less big name FAs, do the math, the 2011 FAs are gonna be even more overpaid than the 2010 FAs.

Plus during this time of penny pinching and teams losing money, you can basically get the one player outside of maybe kobe, lebron who can guarantee you profitability, you think an owner won't pay Yao even knowing you can only play him 24 minutes a night. Yao is closest thing there is to guaranteed profit, any NBA team with him is going to be in the black.

    Tru,

No one knows what the max slot will be....because the CBA is expiring.

As an example Yao is eligible for an extension right now.....have the Rockets given him one? Why not?

Probably not, that is A LOT of money to be giving a guy who is coming off 5 years of injuries and a sixth at 24 minutes per game. If Yao breaks down again and they offer whatever the Max ends up being, it would CRIPPLE their team for years. To much risk involved however IF he does have a good season and explodes in the playoffs then MAYBE one of those teams might take a leap of faith.

All it takes is one, if the clippers put a 6 year $130 million extension infront of Yao, you think he would turn it down and sign a 5 year $60million with the rockets? His Team Yao would not let that happen.

Then you let him walk, or sign and trade him for Blake Griffin.

    :)
