My wife and I drove home from lunch today and passed a ticket scalp...uh...broker with this on their billboard outside: Simon & Garfunkel Prince Kiss Rush Is this 1980 or 2004? Maybe the US Festival is making a comeback too.
I wish it was back in the 80's I would be a wild and crazy teenager, and I saw those groups as a teenager. WOW!
I wish it was back in the '80's because I would be 20+ years younger! And Austin would be 20+ years smaller. (~1970 would be even better!)
I thought Simon and Garfunkle were broken up or something in 1980. (your point remains, of course.) How the hell are people still paying money to see Kiss? Putting aside the fact that they haven't had a new album in forever, they've got two chumps wearing the makeup of the original guys they just fired again! Then again, I saw Rush last year and I'm looking forward to seeing Judas Priest this summer.
I'm seeing Prince on my birthday, Aug 6th. I'm going to party like it's 1999 (That will make me five years younger, so it should be easier to do)
S&G broke up in the 70's, and reunited for the concert in Central Park ( which is outstanding, BTW) in '81.
Because they actually put on a good show. Nobody wants a new album from them- the old show still kicks anything else out there today's ass. I agree about the original members thing ... I may pay to see it though- Peter Criss is like 60 years old, and I could do without hearing 'Beth'. Not having Ace there is not cool though.
Wasn't addressing your accuracy, was responding to Hippieloser's post. Didn;t even see yours till after.
I just think it is ironic that in 2004 the biggest acts of the summer are Prince, Simon & Garfunkel, Kiss and Rush.
I just saw Rush last night out at the Mudpit...uh, I mean the Woodlands Great show...they played from 7:40 to around 11 or so. what say you andymoon...great show?
Prince is a musical genius, Paul Simon is the best lyricist ever, and Kiss captured a brief time. Rush I can't explain.
I've often thought about this, actually. Who will be still filling up stadiums from the current generation of pop in 10 years? Linkin Park? John Mayer? Jet? There hasn't been a decent stadium rock band in ages. None of the current generation of bands that play the Pavilion and the like will draw for 20 years like Metallica or Bon Jovi or Kiss. Why does everyone think this is? Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the intimacy of club shows, but when I saw Iron Maiden last year I realized that I really missed the giant spectacle shows of yesteryear, with lazers and props. Check out Dio's "Sacred Heart" DVD and you'll see what I mean.
Kind of odd how some bands can sell a boatload of tickets for their concerts but cant sell albums anymore. Bands like Kiss fall into that category. Just last night here in Beaumont they had ZZTOP and Hank Williams Jr. concert. In the paper the promoter says he thinks they drew close to 16,000 people. THat is ALOT of people in the Beaumont area. If I remember correctly, some months back the Red Hot Chili Peppers broke the attendance record at the CWMithchell Pavillion and I do not believe it was as much as this ZZTOP show. Anyway, it is funny how bands can sell out live shows but not sell their new music. Personally I would go see more of these older acts if they released and Played some new tunes at the shows. If they just keep playing the same songs every year (Poison) then they just end up being a total Nostalgic act and there is no need to go more than once to see them.
