Credit to bnb for the thread idea. Sorry I couldn't fit the entire title.

So, Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling were convicted so they will be serving significant time, but they get to hang out till the week of September 11th before they start. Keep in mind, you still somehow have access to scads of cash (how that happened, I don't know), but no passport, and you still have a ton of legal stuff to wrestle with (punishment phase, probably lawsuits). What would you do with your last four months of freedom before likely committing the rest of your existence to the federal penitentiary system?

I'd move my ass to somewhere quite remote. Even if they find me, what are they going to do? Sentence me to more years in prison? Big deal.

    Mexico. No doubt about it.

If I'm ever facing long jail time, I'm running. They can take me down if they wish, but I'm not spending any kind of significant time in jail.

I have to say my first temptation would be to get the hell out of the country. Take what cash I have available to me and see if I can get a pilot who can smuggle me to Seychelles or Sealand or whoever will harbor me for money. And, if it doesn't work, so what -- I was going to prison for the rest of my life anyway. The problem is that I'd probably be taking money out of the pockets of my wife and children to do it, and I don't know if I could do that. Then again, after spending half of $38 million on my legal defense, I might be immune to such feelings by now.

Lay and Skilling will probably do lame stuff like prepare for their trial and spend time with their families.

They could easily get to Mexico, or Canada, and then to Spain where it is a non extradition country.

How do I know about Spain? 2 of the directors of Gizmondo are currently hiding there.

Won't they go to a federal penetentary for White Collar crime? Probably will not even have a fence.

How many years are they projected to get?

I'd be leaving the country one way or another. They'd never find me sitting under a palapa drinking fruity drinks in some tropical climate.

JV you should edit the title to say "if you had to surrender your passports like Lay and Skilling did" cause I don't think that's resonating.

It's hard to get out of here without one, and I don't think Skilling or Lay is going to be able to get near a border crossing anytime soon.

Obviously you haven't been following the news and the public out cry about how easy it is to cross the border. Something tells me that if 2 guys with the amount of money these 2 have want to disappear there will be more than one way for them to do so.

true, if anybody's likely to swim across the river and hike 100 miles on foot across the desert in the middle of the summer it's Lay and Skilling.

my point is money would buy them a lot of help. I doubt they'd have to walk or swim at all.

For a million in small unmarked bills I'll deliver them to the Hilton Americas in Monterry Mexico myself. :D

I think you guys have been watching too much Shawshank Redemption!

It ain't that easy (Lay is broke anyway) and they'll be monitored pretty frequently anyway.

They could buy a Yacht, and travel to Mexico by themselves, or go to one of the Caribean Islands that don't extradite. Then apply for citizenship and get a passport from there, and move to Europe or Russia, or anywhere that will not extradite them.

I can't believe they would hang around at their ages and be content to sit in Prison for the rest of their lives.

Switzerland is a great place to live.

    :)

This is the reason why I wouldn't run. You're going to a place where there are tennis courts, personal trainers, yoga, and lobster for dinner. Is that better than any place you could escape too?

You bet. Gotta give it a shot, since they're looking at about 100 years or so. Don't agree on the "take me down" part, however.
