What will this Bill Do to the Republican Party As I type there is another bill on the table that has support of everyone except the House Republicans. As has been mentioned on this site numerous times, the wall street republicans (george bush) has relied on the base of the christian right populist part of the republican party to get votes. The house republicans who represent the more populist wing of the party are clearly getting pressure from the people they represent not to support this bill. on the other hand the president and the senate republicans are ready to bail out their buddies. if this bill goes through will the wall street republicans be able to rely on the base of the people who vote on family values, christianity, etc. will this destroy the base or will this soon be forgotten. there is already a lot of dissatisfaction going back to 06 elections. there are already more seats at risk for the election. what will happen if this bill passes to the party, what if nothing happens.
This fracture reminds me of the fracture the Democratic party experienced in the beginning or the Iraq war. If the consequences are similar, Republicans are in for some electoral pain.
The Republican party needs to crash, rebuild and deliver itself from the kook and big business elements who exercise too much control now. If they do, I'll be happy to vote for them again in 2012. DonnyMost, you know the old saying, "No pain, no gain" Let's heap the pain on the GOP this year.
According to Cornyn's aide that I talked to, the calls are 200-to-1 against. When we were out protesting, probably 70% of the cars that passed honked and waved support or cheered for us, and just a few flipped us off or did anything negative. The House Republicans have the voters overwhelmingly on their side. If it doesn't pass, there are no political points to gain either way. If it does pass, anyone who lives off the east coast who votes for this bill will lose considerable support. The longer that the debate goes on, the worse the fallout will be. This is a Brady Bill-type vote, where people who are against it will know how their Congressmen and Senators voted.
I'm not so sure about this. It's a fairly easy vote to demonize either way. If you vote yes, your opponent is going to claim you're bailing out Wall Street blah blah blah. If you vote no, your opponent is going to say that while the rest of Congress came together to save the country, you voted for a Great Depression as a cynical political move. I know neither one is quite true, but it's easy to spin if the opponent can get on top of the story.
I agree completely! Except you would be talking about the Democrats, since the Republicans have never been without the big business elements. Southerners including Texans used to be hard-lining Democrats remember, because the Republicans were those big wig Union Steel carpetbagging monopolists who wanted as much unheeded capitalism as possible remember? Actually, I'm 23, I don't remember, I'm just going with what I've heard.
It may completely split apart - between the bill and the controversy over the Palin selection times are not good in Republi-land.
Nearly every poll I've seen on the web has this bill, or a bailout, in a negative light by a large margin. Most people do not want it. Spoiler
Cynically speaking, I think the best tactic of a minority party in Congress is to obstruct and oppose whenever possible. Everyone hates Wall Street in a crisis like this, seems like a pretty easy play to me.
The fallout from the bill defeat is going to be huge - according to polls the blowback is already falling strongly on the Repubs. To make matters worse, probably everybody's least favorite former Rep after Tom Delay, Newt G, was apparently working against the Paulson bill, behind the scenes, then sent out a press release saying he was for it after it already failed, according to MSNBC via Huffington post. This complete catastrophe is supposed to lay the groundwork for Newt 08 Just an absolute circus over on that side of the aisle. Forthcoming, a possible massive defeat for McCain and a complete shambles of a Republican party at war with itself over the bailout, Palin, etc.
I am not sure who I blame more the Dems who voted No so they could add more Pork to it later or the Republicans trying to hedge against this plan going poorly. I guess equal blame right now and see what happens later this week.
LOL what a spin the liberal media is pushing out now.....they are in down right panic mode. Last time I checked the dems had a majority in the house and could have easily passed this without any republican votes. There were 95 dems who voted no for the bill and 1/3 of the committee dems voted no who were responsible for writing the bill. Bottom line is the people voiced their opinion to the lawmakers thanks to websites like this http://www.daveramsey.com/etc/fed_bailout/3_steps_to_change_the_nations_future_10928.htmlc?ictid=sml and the sensible views of people like Steve Forbes who actually know what they are talking about.
