I'm curious... currently I'm in college, and I am wondering what others have majored in and if that degree even applies to their job. And also, the longevity of that job and if it has been paying well... Any information on stuff related this, wouldn't hurt. As you can see, I'm somewhat lost in what kind of job I would like to pursue, of course I'd like to decide on a major first, and also finish college... yeah... side note: my dream job is to make a lot of money working for the Rockets. (laughing at myself... but I'm serious about this) p.s. please help
I got my Bachelor's of Science in mathematics from Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) in 1995; did grad school in math or tried in Alabama and then worked. Went back at night a couple of years ago and got my Master's of Business Administration from MTSU in the spring of 2005. I have been at my present job for over 5 years. It is a financial one; can't complain about the pay, and no I don't use my major at all for my job. I was lucky that I got my job as I knew someone powerful within the company. As much as I hate to say it - sometimes the old saying, "It's not how much you know, but who you know" holds true.
Chemistry as an undergrad; biochemistry in grad school. I've been able to work in the field, in both lab jobs and (college level) teaching jobs. So it does work... problem is that I've discovered deep down I'm not a science person. I may see if I can go for a while without using it, or without using it as my full-time job.
History. Although I work in the space business. Alot more liberal arts degrees here than you would expect.
MIS- Been out for a few years, got a job in IT with working for a SQS firm that works with oil companies.. I'm happy that I'm doing work that I like, I think that's the most important thing.. Do something you love and you'll never "WORK" a day in your life.. I was planning on trying to be a dentist when I first started school, then I changed to MIS after my first semester..
Sports Broadcasting....or more poinently broadcast journalism with an emphasis on Sports. Got a job offer as a weekend sports anchor on KGNS Pro 8 news in Laredo.....at 12k a year....this was in 1990, so I turned it down and went into computer games instead. DD
Business Management.. I work in upper management of some finance companies I started. I do not use one bit of what I learned in my college days. I would have been better served getting an accounting degree, and figuring how to do my taxes better.
Accounting then Law I give seminars and presentations on advanced financial planning topics. Very little application other than the perception of additional expertise.
This is my 4th year and i still don't have a major. Currently at UH, guess i'll apply for the pre-business major. That always buys me another semester. Here comes 4 months of 1st level classes
BS in computer science from UH graduated year 2000 I work as a software analyst, so yes i'm doing something related to my degree. The pay is good, but I don't really like jacking with computers all day long, i'd rather be doing something outdoors.
If everyone did that, we'd be even more overrun with, say, music majors than we already are. I would have never even had to bother with that science business... I am still considering demonstrating my immaturity and irresponsibility by going back to school for music education, as long as I can manage to scrape by. That would enable me to "be myself", spend time on something I like and spend too much time on anyway (imagine being able to actually say I'm "supposed to" be working on orchestra, band or choir stuff, as opposed to having to fit it in around my actual job), and put off growing up for even longer, since growing up didn't really work the first time I tried it. Again, not necessarily smart. I don't know what I would do with it when I got out. Anyway, looking at most of you guys' majors, I think I would die of boredom studying or working in those areas. Sigh...
I'm in my first year of college. Still at a local Junior College. I'm planning on transferring to the University of Buffalo after two years, where I'll major in Physical Therapy, and go into a 6 year program (hopefully I'll have two of those down already) and get a Doctor's in Physical Therapy.
2nd year in college, major in CS, minor in economic. Don't know what the job market is going to look like when I graduate.
Classics. Greek, Latin, and Art History. I work in real estate. Probably should have studied accounting, finance or engineering, then law. Ehh. No biggie. I learned a lot of cool $h#t.
Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. I can't say that I really like computers but when I was graduating high school, that was the field to go into a field where you could make a good living, so thats what I chose. I wanted to do something outdoors like being a game warden or something similar, but I like nice things (fast cars) so I always knew I had to do something were I could make more money. I think when people say "do something you love" or whatever, then people get into these weird majors or get themselves in a bind by changing majors or just becoming lost and confused not knowing what to do. Sometimes being bored or doing things that you don't want to do is just part of life and you have to suck it up. Those always looking for a thrill or expecting every single thing they do to be fun and interesting usually always end up in a bind one way or another.
I was a physics and math major.. and then I completely flunked my gRE physics and couldn't get in any of the physics grad programs I wanted, so I just said screw it. and now working a temp job in an office. It's like one of the most boringest works ever, but it was nice at first, cuz i got to just sit at my desk and do nothing, but lately, they have 'discovered' me, and have been giving me load & load of works that is not in my job description. They want to hire me as a real assciate, but who would want to sit there 9-5 daily doing the same thing over and over? I figure even if I advance in the department, I would still be doing esentially the same thing over and over again, just a different same thing. I am probalby going back to school in jan to get a master in education, so I can be a secondary school teacher, so I can have summer vacation, and an early exit hour. I need more times to study physics.. (so I can take the gre physics again, my confidence is like completely crushed right now)... and play basketball.. this 9-5 job is killing me, I get out, and it's dark already. What the heck. I still say just major whatever you are interested in.. even if it doesn't guarantee a good job. You would have plenty of times in your life to just worry about making a living. And once you start to just worry about making a living, you would be spending your whole life trying to just make a living. Do good enough to make a living, then live your life. For me, I would love to get into grad school and eventually get into hardcore physics field. I am getting old, but I feel like I am just starting to learn...
