I just got back the results from the last exam I took in one of my CS classes, and the class average is a 24.89/75 (out of ~70 students). I've had some classes with low averages for exams, but this is by far the lowest (the next lowest was probably the 1st exam in the same class, 39.9/75). I guess I was just curious to see if anyone else has had situations like this.

in my 3rd year of my masters in CS, the physics (electronic) course had a 5/20 average at ULB (Université Libre de Bruxelles, Belgium). I got lucky, I got 10/20 lol.

I went to college in the early days of the internet, back when it was just a few tubes, so I'm curious --

When you score that low in a Comp Sci test these days, does your professor send you an e-mail with the "EPIC FAIL" graphic?

I took a Physics class in college where the exam grading breakdown was as follows:

    80 - 100%: A
    60 - 80%: B
    40 - 60%: C
    20 - 40%: D
    0 - 20%: E

I was very happy to come away with a 74% in that class.

I don't remember exactly, but I think it was in the mid 40s for either a physics or a circuits test. Really low test scores(based on the normal 90-100 = A, 80-89 = B, etc. criteria) were pretty common in college. So I didn't exactly remember much about them.

I did remember my AP physics test in high school though. I remember leaving pretty much half the test BLANK, not even filled with incomplete BS answers. I thought I got about 30% correct on the test... and was really pissed because physics was one of my better subjects.

And then when I got my grades, I saw that I got a 4. I had that WTF look for quite a while.

I had a chemical engineering test that I solved 2 out of 8 questions. I had no idea how to begin the other 6 problems and left them blank. I had missed a couple of classes and these problems were not from the homework. I got up after about 30 minutes even though I was alloted 2 hours and left in disgrace. Ran a couple of errands then went to Trudy's to drown my sorrows in a couple of Mexican Martinis.

Just after I got my second MM, Mark from the same class shows up. He tells me everyone in the class is pissed at me for destroying the curve. Apparently, no one knew how to solve the last 6 problems which I had assumed were based on lectures that I missed.

I don't know what class average was, but the prof said I had best score and didn't have to take the final.

As a freshman I took an algebra class. I wen the first day and never went back. I never turned in any assignments or took any exams. I never dropped it either. I passed with a C. I don't know what the class average what but that must have been one hell of a curve. That was the only math class I needed so I only had one day of math in college. :p

there was a test in Materials, which was a worthless and fairly easy ChE course, where I think the class average was in the mid-30's. i got a solid 37.5, which was easily the worst i ever got on a test. aside from ridiculous questions, the one thing i remember is copying an answer that not only came down to me about 6 people into a row, but which started about 6 people into the row above me. so about 12 people. i believe i got 0/25 points on that question, so it was the blind leading the blind there.

of course, after that disaster of a test, he made the subsequent test and final so easy that everyone cruised to a high A and since everyone had pretty close to a 37.5 on that other test, damn near everyone ended up with the same grade and 90% of the class got an A for the semester. apparently he had to change things up a bit the next semester.

i also remember being one of 3 people with an A in organic chemistry II (got a 75.2 when a 75 was an A, friend got 74.6 for the 3rd A) and i got a 58.5 on the final. average wouldn't have been down in the 30's, but it couldn't have been high.

other than those, i didn't really have a lot of the classes where it was just assumed that 30's and 40's would be the norm.

My trig class this semester had an avg of 40% on the 1st exam, 70% on the 2nd, and 30% on the third. The teacher is pretty much the worst teacher to ever live, and completely in his own world. Wears the same clothes every day.

My theory is that there were a bunch of football players in that class. Wink, wink. Nudge, nudge. ;)

I had a physics 318 class taught by Dr. Hu (pronounced who) where on one test the class average was 17. I had an 11 and many people got zeros. A friend of mine got a 1, he was so pissed. He kept saying over and over, " A ONE, I wish I got a ZERO, at least I could say I didn't show up. A ONE proves I was there."

For those who have attended or currently attend the Bauer College of Business at UH, Staci Smith's Statistics class had a low average. The mean was around a 65% for the tests. She has to adjust the grading scale just to increase the likelihood that you pass. A 55% is considered passing rather than the typical 60%. The material is actually quite easy, but when you have a PHD writing the tests as if they were meant for graduate students the grades don't reflect true knowledge. If you answered 10 questions and left 6 blank you simply got them wrong. If you answered 10 questions and actually guessed on the remaining 6 you were penalized an additional amount. This isn't the SAT. Her arguement was she gave the test to her dog and he guessed right on 3. My grade was posted last night and i squeeked out a 55.3540%. You can't cut it any closer than that.

In Thermodynamics II, a Chemical Engineering class, I had a teacher who was known for his confusing (and often under-defined) test questions, and didn't give partial credit. I was in a class of eight, and he gave a three question test in which no one got a single answer right. He ended up giving it back to us for us to take home and with research, we did better.

I was taking an chem class at my local CC and the first test came back and the mean was like 52. The instructor was a douche, he had us doing lab time for most of the class and just memorizing stuff like the periodic table and formulas. Then the test was almost completely applied problem solving. I got a 54. Then we find out some Asian b**** got a 94 though and destroyed the whole curve. I dropped the next day since I was only taking it because a friend had asked me to.

In O-Chem at UT a 25 would have gotten you a B+ maybe even an A-

The artificial intelligence class I'm taking has a 30 something class average. Which is kind of surprising because I thought the materials aren't all that hard. I think most people signed on to this class expecting that they gonna get to write game AI or program robots an d stuff, but it turned out to be all math and algorithm.
