I've recently decided to major in Hotel & Restaurant Management. I believe this will be my third major in two years so I'm defintely sticking with this one else I don't think I will ever finish. I've decided to major in this mostly because it is interesting and I think I can avoid working behind a desk for long periods of times. Other reasons are that people that are in the program are having alot of fun and they should have no problem getting a job after they graduation (from what they say). Hopefully I've found something that will get me decent money and a job that I enjoy. What path did you take in college? I'm interested
I have a friend that is in the H&RM program at UH. I'm a political science major, but I'm basically finished with all my courses in that.. so I'm concentrating on my minor, journalism. I might go back once I finish and get my major in journalism, or perhaps some other kind of print media.. I'm interesting in working in publications/news/journals etc.. I really have no idea if I'm on the right track to get there though.
rf83, are you at UH or somewhere else? I concentrated (because U of C doesn't do 'majors') in history. My current job has nothing to do with history, unless looking at the company's performance over the last 12 months is a study of history (and I wouldn't say it is). But, I never intended for my degree to have anything to do with my career anyway, so it's all been working to plan.
Chemistry major. (Biochemistry in grad school, though I'm back on the chemistry side now.) I have always used my major. Now I teach it to other people. I didn't want to end up in some random job like consulting, sales, or an office like the one "Dilbert" works in. Even though those pay well. I don't like the corporate environment. With my major, there have been plenty of opportunities in academic and medical research institutions. Part of me is a "closet wannabe music major", but I was too scared of the job prospects to ever do that. I just try to work on it on the side.
I was an art history major with minors in studio art, French, and Spanish (well, one class short of a minor). I also have a Masters in art history and am currently pursuing my PhD in art history (somewhat slowly due to working, etc.). I am a rare broken record, though.
Also graduated from UH. Got MIS and Marketing degrees 3 years ago (stayed the course and fought hard with the sorry ass teachers there) . I bet it's hard now to do it. But UH sucked. Should of went to Texas or Texas A&M.
I was a philosophy major in college. The I went to culinary school and got an AAS in culinary arts. Ultimately that lead to what I am doing now which is working as an independent custom cake designer. Along the way I worked for the Ritz-Carlton in Chicago which is part of the Four Seasons. It is definately one of the best hotel groups in the world and senior management is well paid. But the competition for those great jobs in hotel management is much more stiff than admissions counselors to the programs would have you think. All of those positions at that hotel were filled by people with MBAs in addition to hotel-specific training (usually Cornel) and about 15 to 20 years of experience. After all that, they still spent a great deal of time behind a desk. The competition isn't so bad if you are willing to work for less prestigous companies. But part of that is because they don't give you as much independence to run the hotel how you would like. It is somewhat analogous to running a McDonald's Franchise vs. trying to open a high end restaurant. Good luck!
Management Major from A&M It got me 3 consecutive internships and a full time job straight out of school.
The first time I went to college, I was an accounting major. I've never worked in accounting, though (well, I have had a few short-term accounting jobs). I went back to get a second degree in advertising. I like advertising, and all my professors said I was very good at it, but the people who do the hiring aren't interested in hiring me, so the degree hasn't helped me at all in terms of getting a job. But since the movie thing is happening, I've given up looking (and I only graduated in August, so it's possible I just didn't pursue it long enough). I'm going to end up getting an MBA, but it's more because I want to have a Masters degree of some sort rather than because I think it will open up any employment doors (I've discovered that I'm pretty well unemployable for some reason).
I was a Human and Organizational Development major - which is basically Vanderbilt's answer to a business major - but with some required core A&S classes, a lot of leadership development and a full-time 1 semester internship all included. I absolutely loved it due to the fact that it was pretty open-ended and taught skills that were applicable in any industry you wanted...... For me, that industry was sports - I started my job exactly 4 days after I graduated!
Majored in Histroy, minored in English, though I had enough hours to minor in Philosophy and Poli Sci as well. Masters in US History. How I got to where I am is a long and tortured story that I won't bore you with, but I use my Liberal Arts skills all the time in my job. (The world definitely needs more Generalists.)
English Major. I started out doing Computer Science, but I switched over to English after I realized how much coding sucked. After graduation I completed a distance program in Real Estate Appraisal, but I had trouble finding someone to hire me for the mandatory work term (plus the institute wanted me to pay a $2500 insurance charge, even though I wasn't working in the field) so I ditched that idea. I then decided that I wanted to be a gourmet chef, so I worked in a factory for a year to save up tuition money. However, after a while I gave up on that idea and decided to join the military (Navy). After four months of military life, though, I realized that it wasn't for me so I applied for voluntary release and was honorably discharged last December. Now, I will be starting a Bachelor of Education program this September with hopes of becoming a high school English teacher, which is something that I can see myself doing.
Music major from SHSU. What did that degree get me? A job working in a cubicle for an insurance company. Go figure.
Undecided for a year, History and English double major for two years, never finished the English major (used it as my minor). Graduated with the History degree (specialized in modern American history) in August 2002. Where did it take me? I work as a project manager for a large and somewhat well-known company in Austin. I start in the MBA program at UT this fall, specializing in international business, which will hopefully end up with me living and working in Japan for a few years once I finish.
Bachelor of Science in Advertising, UT-Austin, 1983. I graduated in the midst of the early-80s oil bust. There were no companies recruiting on campus and no jobs in Advertising upon graduation. It led me straight into a tech support job in IT. I've been in IT ever since. I am currently the Security Administrator for the HR/Payroll system of a large organization you have all heard of but I cannot identify. Doesn't really matter, however. My daytime gig is there just to make my nighttime gig, which is what I really love, economically possible.
Theater major with minors in art history and english. Still act when possible (member of SAG & Equity). Ended up in Publishing as a day job.
