i would argue that experience and great coaching would be extremely necessary. But the most important thing HAS to be a burning desire to win

a player who isn't naturally gifted (ie: not tall or athletic), who had to figure out intelligent strategic ways to get an edge during his playing years..

it's kinda like how extremely intelligent people make horrible physics teachers because they understand stuff so easily that they can't relate to the normal people.. but the opposite. naturally gifted players have it easy, so they're not that much into the tactical aspect of the game: they just play and pwn everyone.. Bullard-type players need to understand the system and get every little detail to have an edge (to compensate for the lack of natural ability)

One with heart and a strong personality. Some good assistants probably help too.

Aren't most coaches nowadays former point guards? They are called extensions of the coach in the floor :) . The only one I can remember right now who is the exception is Lambier (a coach of the detriot shock if I'm correct).

    Oh ye, Kevin McHale.

Now that guy could play... That guy was good...

    Signed,

    Stuart Scott.

usually a lesser gifted (athletically) pg, who really could see how plays unfold on the court. they're capable of making quick decisions because they can see how every position is being played.

Mostly scrub, marginal and/or non-star (bench, rotational) players like
    Pat Riley
    Rick Adelman
    Jerry Sloan
    Phil Jackson
    Nate McMillan
Doc Rivers (I think was an allstar)
Byron Scott (maybe excluded from the list. Was an allstar at 1 point I think)
    Avery Johnson
    Don Nelson

The superstars typically fail maybe except for Bill Russell
    Isaiah Thomas
    Magic Johnson
    Kevin McHale
Clyde Drexler (was mediocre in college)
Reggie Theus (probably not given a fair shot)

And Jordan would be a terrible coach

    true that.

Phil Jackson was an bench player for the NYK, not naturaaly gifted but had to figure out ways to impress his coach to get PT

Bill Russell, as a player-coach, did led the Celtics to win the Championship. that's because Bill Russell, the HoF Center was, on his team.

the true test was when he became a full-time coach, without an HoF center. he didn't pass the test. he was part owner of the Kings when they first moved to Sacto. he was a miserable failure

Larry Bird was a pretty good coach for the pacers in mid-late 90s

didnt KC Jones lead the celtics to some titles as a coach? he is a HOF too.

ultimately it depends on who you have on the court. Phil Jackson couldn't lead the Thunder or Wolves to 20 win seasons this year.

Players that sit on the bench a lot next to their coaches, and take a strong interest in what they say.

You would have thought that Michael Curry of the Pistons would be a great coach, but it seems to me that his players don't listen to him much, nor do they look at him like Flip Saunders or Larry Brown.

I think Kobe would be a TERRIBLE coach. He'd command too much attention on himself and take away from the team. It would be a media circus ( See: Isaiah Thomas).

I think Patrick Ewing will be a good coach when he gets his chance one day.

My top pick though: Shane Battier Now, that would be a great coach. Good knowledge of the game, great communication skills and the ability to model strong work ethic.

Worst possible choices: Scottie Quitten, Stephen Jackson( one of my favorite players outside the Rockets) and anyone in the entire state of Utah.

I think there is absolutely no correlation to the player they were and the coach they are now. It's not like these former superstar coaches were just dumb athletes when they played. They were on court leaders who truly knew the game...but coaching is not playing and being a good player has nothing to do with being a good coach.

I will say that it's possible that former superstars don't have the patience needed to coach guys who can never do what they did.
