Okay here is my situation - I've been out of high school since 1999 - I've already had two amazing jobs in radio within those three years... Now im out of a job - and looking and have been for 3 months - there are no jobs! There are so many people unemployed in houston they are all fighting for the same positon. So now that IM 21 - i moved back to my parents crib and got rid of all my bills - I have only my 230 dollar a month car payment - excluding the insurance. this is what im currently thinkin.... Join HPD - It has been a lifelong dream to become a houston police officer - they require 61 college credit hours - yet they only start at $26,000 ANNUALLY...I wont be able to live off that (I surpassed that in radio- way beyond that) Become a politiician (City Council member) - Is it worth being a loser with no money for four years in college? Or Just do it for the money and get a Bach degree and then go out and work for a monster oil/gas/energy company? But Im afraid that if I spend all those years and money in college I will get out and be stuck in the same position I am now! LOOKING FOR A JOB! So is it worth it? Will I get a good job after college? or should i just stick it out and wait till i get a job for another 3 months? I'm really depressed about this and its driving me crazy! I dont know what to do!
Maybe NIT. MTI, ITT less time but still about the same money QUESTION: what do you *like* to do? If Radio is your thing. . . Maybe a degree in broadcasting Rocket River
I'm curious what did you do in radio?? I always thought that was a tough industry to crack(especially right out of high school).
Yea radio is a tough industry to get in... I was a sales assistant and then I went up the ladder to a manager's position as Research Director. I quit in March because I was hired at a radio station in Miami - I went to miami for a week - HATED MIAMI, it't nothing like Houston. Nothin is like MY HOUSTON --- so I told the radio station over there before I started that I wasnt happy with Miami and left back to Houston. I didnt officially moved there - i was stayin with a friend and was going to eventually move my stuff over to Miami. SO - to the point I got into radio because I knew people in the business... BUT IT IS A VERY HARD INDUSTRY to get in, there's only a certain amount of positions. But I'm not really happy of the way radio is heading towards - it's becoming or is already VERY CORPORATE...
I feel your pain HecktikG81... i was laid off from my software engineering position back in february! i've been bored senseless while looking for a job, but there are no open software engineer positions for people who have less than 5 years experience! i graduated with a B.S. in C.S. a couple of years ago! luckily i saved wisely and got a good severance package, so i can live on my own for a long time (and stilll pay all my bills...) but i'm just BORED OUT OF MY MIND!!!!! check out my sig for what i've been doing...
Here, this is a source of much inspiration for the laid off: www.oddtodd.com Watch all the cartoons.....seriously, it will make you feel better.
HectikG81, Which company/ stations did you work for? I've been in Commercial Radio for a year and half now, and I've had a lot of fun. Of course Lubbock has had a lot happen in the past few years like Goal Posts getting torn down, Bob Knight, and other stuff. Rob
thanks rocketblast... with all the ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNN, ESPNC, Fox Sports, CNNSI, AM Sports Talk, and sports web sites I look at EVERY DAY for 12 hours a day... i've become more immersed in sports than when i was a teenager (and i never thought that was possible!)
ugh....Clear Channel? (otherwise known as Satan) Houston rock radio hasn't been the same since they bought up most of the channels around here.. Are you stuck with the idea of stayin in Houston perm.? or was it just Florida you couldn't hang with...I heard from a friend of mine that some stations down in the valley were looking for ppl.
