This weekend I am coming to H-town to visit some buddies of mine from college. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go out......I know that downtown is supposed to be pretty cool, but its too UPSCALE and snotty for my a$$.... Ive been to some ok bars on Richmond, but for the majority, they are complete SWORD FIGHTS comments? ------------------ "Chucky who?" Charles Barkley
The real question is, where are you going to be in Houston. Houston is pretty big and you could have to pack a lunch to get from one side of town to the other... But I'll offer a few suggestions, mainly inside the loop (610) There are plenty of great restaurants to eat at. If you have newsgroup access, try houston.eats I'm sure there are some good restaurant websites, I don't have access to them right now. Houston food has almost everything to offer. If you want to each pick up your own tabs, try Cafe Express, good food, decent prices and several locations. Pizza and Italian - Star Pizza (2 locations) Carabba's, Corelli's and Collina's. Burgers - Barnaby's Cafe (2 locations), Baba Yega's, Lankford Grocery, Cafe Express... Mexican - La Mexicana, El Rey (for good, quick to-go) The Original Ninfa's on Navigation. There are also the Pappa's restaurants, Pappasito's and Pappadeux (mex and seafood respectively) There are also the Goode Co. restaurants (BBQ, Taquieria and Seafood) I could go and on about restaurants we have THOUSANDS!!! Bars? Try Little Woodrows on Alabama... you can catch Rocket games there and right next door is Mission Burrrito's. Good eats. We do have plenty of place to partake in libations. I'd stay away from The Richmond Strip (overplayed and underrated) and you're right, downtown can be snotty! There are plenty of places in and around Montrose and Rice. Pub atmosphere? Slainte, The Black Lab, The Ale House... Pool? Slick Willies, Cecils..there are alot of places to hang out at... If you like Adult Entertainment, Houston has tons of Breast Lounges. My suggestion would be to pick up a Houston Press (crappy local weekly paper) or a Houston's Other (another weekly) Welcome to Houston, enjoy your stay and stay out of the fast lane, especially if you're not sure where you're going. good luck rH ------------------ Homecourt will always be 'The Summit' to me!! It would be foolish to come to Houston this weekend and miss this: http://houston.citysearch.com/profile/11471104/ ------------------ stop posting my damn signature
Sam's Boat and The Outback Pub on Richmond are pretty cool places to hang out and meet some ladies. I guess you could say that the crowds there are usually a little younger. I miss all of the Willie's restaurants in NW Houston. Fajita Willie's is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. Willie's Icehouse is also good. Both are economical. ------------------ "...just because a clever person can complicate the discussion about the truth doesn't necessarily mean he or she is making any progress in finding it."
Agreed. It is one of the better festivals here in H-town. This weekend will be my third straight year to go. It's a blast! ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
Not true. Depends on the kind of music you are looking for. If you are into blues, roots-rock, and country, Houston is a very good place for live music. I would recommend the Dropkick Chihuahuas on Saturday night at the Local Charm club. Definitely pick up a Houston Press. ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
Isn't the International festival happin' soon? And the (now defunct) Westheimer Colony Arts festival? Man! Now that was a fun way to waste a beautiful Spring Saturday in Houston. ------------------ Everything you do, effects everything that is.
I would definitely recommend Sisters Morales at Mucky Duck on Saturday night. RocketMan Tex...you definitely need to see them. One of the sisters is married to the guitar player, and this guy is a phenom. It's hard to describe their music. The do play some songs in Spanish (those songs give me goosebumps), but they have a good mix of other styles. I'd have to describe them as country-rock with a bit of Spanish thrown in. Sort of Eagles meets Linda Rondstat---still, that description doesn't do them justice. They're just damn good. ------------------ stop posting my damn signature
Pole...I've seen the Sisters Morales four or five times, and they are fantastic. A former girlfriend of mine turned me on to them a little over two years ago, and I've been hooked ever since. Their vocal harmonies blow me away. And you're right...their guitar player kicks major butt. Anyone who thinks Houston doesn't have a good live music scene just needs to see the Sisters Morales play to see how wrong they are about the music scene here. ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
I know that live music kinda blows in Houston, but are there any good places to check out bands....Ive heard of Numbers and stuff ------------------ "Chucky who?" Charles Barkley
Once again, I would pick up a Houston Press.. They have most band/club listings. Emo's - Punk, hard music Continental Club - rock, country, twang (rock/country) Engine Room - Rock, punk, hard, alt, new MaryJane's - rock, alt, twang (rock/country) Satellite Lounge - all types We have quite a few places... depending on the type of music you want. Number's - is a dance club, that has shows sometimes. rH ------------------ Homecourt will always be 'The Summit' to me!! Until we move downtown!!
