Being a native Houstonian, I've been to Galveston over a dozen times. But even still, I don't have a real feel for the best places to visit there. I know about Gaido's, but can anyone recommend another great restaurant? Either fancy or casual? Likewise, can anyone recommend a great bar near the seawall? Also, where are the best public beaches? Any tips, tricks, or recommendations would be great.
Thanks for reminding me... Fatty...Salsas is STILL open! Apparently they closed down for a while but opened back up. I was there just this past weekend, got my messy nachos and everything, that made my week
I think it was MR. MEOWGI that said it best (paraphrasing): Galveston was made for Mexican beer and classic rock.
Haha. It's funny cause it's true. Go to The Ocean Grill on the Seawall and have some drinks outside over the water. The food isn't great but it's all about the view (and the buzz). There is a new "biker bar" down by Jamaica beach that looks kind of cool. If you are going to the beach, I like to go all the way down to San Luis, close to the bridge. The seaweed and trash have been bad lately though. That whole area is soon becoming a gated community, so go enjoy it before the Nazis move in. I dont know much about Galveston nightlife but the are a bunch of bars on Post Office (O'Mally's, Mollys). And I guess there is always Yaga's on The Strand. There are plenty of hole in the walls if you feel adventurous...
Mollys near the strand is good for beer and rockets games (when in season). It use to be a favorite of Rudy T's when they had training camp on the island. Benno's on the seawall down near the east end has great seafood. Pappa John the Cajun Greek on 61st is a place the locals all like. They get real crowded and the food is very good. There is a new Woodys (or Woodrow's I can't remember which) on the way to Jamaica beach which the bikers like to frequent. The 7 seas isle market is a good place to buy steaks if you are staying on the west end. Col. Bubbies on the strand is a great place to buy army surplus. The oceanview on the seawall has mediocre food but it's over the water and it is a nice place to sit and drink. The seafood markets by pier 19 are the best places to buy fresh seafood. Stay away from the Flagship and the Seahorse. Both are ultra dives.
dump old soiled baby diapers in the water. and dont forget all your unwanted cigarette butts, bring them on over and dump em in the water. because we all know thats where they belong.
Take your cassette player down on the beach and listen to "Love That Dirty Water" by The Standells My buddies just got back from a bar hoppin afternoon on The Strand and had a great time, but I just go to the family hacienda in Jamaica Beach mainly to lay on the deck and listen to tunes. The deck hangs right over the dunes and I rigged some JBL outdoor speakers out there...it's about my favorite thing to do. I also take a lot of showers in the open air shower (for some reason it seems to make people horny). Woody's is one of those wannbee biker bars, your more likely to see a costumed stockbroker than any real methheads (not that there is anything wrong with that)
The title of this thread should be what not to do in Galveston - because my friend there are a plethora of activities in Gal town. ____ In fact Saturday afternoon i'll be down at Indian beach with a 12 pack of Schaffer beer - dancing on the bedcover of my lowered mini-truck with the Violent Femmes cranked to eleven.
