So my gf and I have this nice vacation to Cozumel planned this holiday weekend and of course the weather is not agreeing with us. I checked weather.com and there is 60-70% showers this entire weekend. So my question to all who have been there, what's there to do in Cozumel if it rains?
We got stuck in 3 days of rain in Cancun a year ago, and it SUCKED. We finally decided to pass the time by playing drinking games. Thank god the clubs were open at night, or else there would have been *nothing* to do at all.
Well, that's why they call this the "rainy season" down there. It's like that the entire summer. The absolute best time to head to the Yucatan is right after New Year's - weather is perfect, little rain, and lots of hot S. American girls on summer break & European & Canadian girls escaping winter.
Yeah, I was hoping the weather would agree with us. We couldn't make it earlier this year and this was the only time that suited both of us. I guess we'll have to cross over to Cancun. I heard there aren't too many good bars on Cozumel. I was really hoping to hang on the beach, or explore the island a bit.
I`ve been over there about 6 times. You would be surprised at how many times it will be raining on one side of the island and not the other. If possible rent a moped or car and go to the other side of the island. There are no hotels and it is undeveloped and the beaches are spectacular. You can go down on the beach and you wont have anyone around you..........it`s awesome. There are a few bars here and there that have beer on ice {no electricity} and they also catch fish daily and grill them.
when you take the ferry you will be in Playa Del Carmen which is a very cool little town and IMHO much better then Cancun. Stroll down 5th Ave and you can shiop, eat and drink. It is not as "Americanized" as Cancun and it is very quaint. You`ll love it
Not sure what to do when its raining, but if there is a break in the weather, do the Jungle Tour. You get your own little two seater speed boat (you get to drive!). They take you through the jungle for a bit and then you get to hit full throttle out on the ocean (jumping waves, huge adrenalin rush). THey take you out to the reef where you can snorkle for an hour or so. Definitely was the highlight of my trip to Cancun.
I'm staying on the south side of the island. Are you talking about the east side? My Cozumel geography is limited, but I think that is the side that looked the least populated. Thanks for the tip!
one side of the island is the hotel zone and the other is uninhabitated. There is one road that circles the island, just jump on it and go..............YOu will love it, have fun
I'm not certified, so is there a beginners course that I can take? Do they let you dive if it's raining? Thanks for the tips everyone!
Do they let you dive if it's raining? Raining, yes. Lightning, no. Its called a resort course. Just do it. Cozumel is one of the top dive destinations of the world.
If your pressed for time it might not be an option. The resort course runs approx 3 hours then you go on a 20 ft one tank dive although this does not qualify you for a PADI card. If your pressed for time you may think about snorkeling as Cozumel as a beautiful reef. If you really want to dive get certified in the US first, it will save you time and money
Yes there most certainly is - I am certified and had a great dive, but the people I was with did a one day intro course which included a full dive on their own. Remember - your vacation is all in your attitude. Enjoy some relaxation, frozen cocktails and good food!! Besides, it will still be hot and it probably won't rain ALL weekend - you will have some reaonable weather. Takie a day trip to Cancun and Chichen Itza.
I've only been there once...on my honeymoon...For the first two days, I honestly couldn't tell ya what the weather was like outside our room. The last three days had beautiful weather.
Don't visit the bbs and enjoy Cozumel as if it is not raining at all. Do all the same things except do it wet.
You can go snorkeling, if you're not certified to dive. The water and animal life there is so amazing that you can see a bajillion things even from the surface. You could go on a snorkeling boat or something, but in my opinion it's a waste, you can just swim right out to anyplace the boats would take you, and all of the locals know the good places. For the most part, just remember that the southwest corner of the island is where all the good snorkeling is. The east side is all absolutely fabulous beaches. Also, be sure and check out the ruins while you're there. Chichan Itza is a great idea if you have the time, but that's also probably a full day's trip. I would stay away from where the cruise ships come in though, unless maybe you want to go to one of the clubs for a night. That part of town is horribly Americanized, and way overpriced. In fact, my wife and I did a lot of our shopping and stuff at the local grocery store. (San Fransisco, on Benito Juarez Rd.) Also, I highly recommend the restaraunt "La Mission". Easily the best restaraunt we ate at on the whole island. It's in between the ferry and the cruise ships. Also, rent the scooters, they're a lot of fun.
