Most of y'all have seen this, but CD had some interesting things to say in the Pike Press Conference re: filling the last couple roster spots...

My job is to meet with the coaches when they get back this Wednesday and we will go over that. We have a coach that really believes in the bench a certain way. He wants personalities that really support the starters and add a lot to the team. Rudy was the same way. We want people that support the starters and make them better. So we aren't just going to go out and pick up two guys and finish out the roster. We are going to do some studying and try and get the best people to support this team. We've got some people in mind. But with the summer league going on and the coaches trying to move here, not being here a lot, we have some meetings set up for this week where we will get down to the nitty gritty of it more than we have. We've just been in a time crunch since we hired the coaching staff, and we haven't had time to do everything. But the main thing, like getting Eric on board, is what we've worked on the hardest. Getting the coach and getting Eric on board is what we've been able to do, so now we can, not relax, but start doing the other stuff.

    ========================================
From this, it looks like the rotation is set. Leaving most of us sitting on our hands until after their meetings this week...

What cheap free agents are left? I did a quick scan, and I came up with the following list...some are out of our price range...but, included them...some are the 'bottom of the barrell'...but, we need cheap, role players...

    1's & 2's:
    Jon Barry
    Kenny Anderson
    Raja Bell
    Rod Strickland
    Mark Jackson
    DeMarr Johnson
    Rick Brunson
    Travis Best
    Anthony Johnson
    Jacque Vaughn
    Vishon Leonard

3's (would love to have any of these guys):
    Kendall Gill
    Jimmy Jackson
    Stephen Jackson

    4's:
    Darvin Ham
    Lee Nailon
    Derrick Coleman
    Charles Oakley
    Tyrone Hill

I'd love to have Travis Best or Vishon Leanord as a back up guard.

I would like to see Lee Nailon who played very well in Mashburns asbsence the season before. Right now, our 3 spot is really sucking.

Okay.....it's surprising to me that all these good players are still available!!!!! Amazing...

When does the season start? There's still some time....how about Training Camp?

Seriously..I like all the guys you listed really. I just love basketball!

Lee Nailon would be a good add on to replace Posey.....but he isn't known as a 3 point threat...is he? He's not what we need exactly...unless he can play big inside and rebound and maybe block shots?.

    Steve Francis/Moochie Norris
    Cuttino Mobley/Eric Piatkowski
    Glen Rice/Bostjan Nachbar
    Eddie Griffin/Maurice Taylor
    Yao Ming/Kelvin Cato

I hope and expect that we sign Juaquin Hawkins. Malick Badiane should be returning to Germany to play...Misikiri might join as an all year injured list guy. Maddox is gone (better be)

At starting point guard...we have an All Star and one of the top point guards. At backup..we have someone who is capable of doing what he is supposed to do with a system...
Mobley is for now...a top 10 shooting guard and good starter and good defender. Piatkowski is a sharpshooter who is a good backup.
Rice is an average small forward veteran who would not be starting on any team that is better than the Rockets. He is a good backup and veteran to have though. Nachbar is a "sophomore rookie" who doesn't seem to be ready to start on an NBA professional team...but he can be forced there. Maybe he's good..
Eddie Griffin is an average power forward who is probably the worst starting power forward in the Western Conference. Duncan, Malone, Nowitzki, Webber, Wallace, Stoudemire, Lewis, and Jamison are all better than him...Taylor is a decent backup power forward.
Yao is the 3rd best center in the NBA right now. Cato is a good backup center who can rebound and provide energy.

Some of the people who were in trades proposed here have been traded already!

Looking at your list of guys.....Voshon Lenard would be the best 2 there but is pretty much Eric Piatkowski. Jon Barry would be good too.....same with Kenny Anderson and Anthony Johnson.

I agree with you about the 3's...I would love to have any of those guys...ESPECIALLY Jimmy Jackson. That would be great if we got him...but I think he is going to be resigned by Sacramento now that Turkoglu has been traded......:( Stephen Jackson is a hometown boy who is not exactly wonderful...he's decent...I wouldn't be mad if we signed him. Kendall Gill is a good guy for the minimum!

Your 4's...Derrick Coleman is my favorite. Lee Nailon and Darvin Ham are 3's...I'd like Darvin Ham on our team just because he can dunk. Oakley and Hill are the same...too oldies who just rebounded....I wouldn't mind having them either.

So basically...like I said....I like all of them! But I like Posey more than any of them! :(

Nailon is a inside-outside 3. He's not a 3pt shooter, but he's a very capable scorer. The season before last when Mashburn missed like 40 games, he played very well and the Hornets did also. In that same season in the playoffs, mashburn missed the playoffs and they still advanced. I would like to see the Rockets go after him to solidify the 3 spot or at least bring Morris back. Nachbar didn't look to promising playing summer ball.

Get Darvin Ham! We need someone who can break backboards!

And me being a huge Tech fan doesn't hurt either.

I think it would be great if we signed Dermarr Johnson and Mark Jackson.

Dermarr is back to playing, and he looked pretty good. He can't shoot, much like Posey, but has a better frame and ball handling ability. Maybe we can improve his set shot much like we did with Posey? It's worth the gamble, unless we're looking at trades. The guys has the PERFECT frame to play GREAT defense.

Mark Jackson CAN'T play much, and we could probably get him to be like Avery Johnson was with the Mavs last season. Player, but acting as an assistant coach, speaking with players, relating to them, while giving us 8-10 solid minutes, and showing Steve how it should be done.

I'd be very happy with the team if we signed those 2.

    Yao/Cato
    MoT/Griff
    Rice/Dermarr/Boki
    Mobley/Pike/Dermarr
    Francis/Mark Jackson/Moochie

That's 12 players. It's a bit thin in the frontcourt though. I still say we trade Cato, Mo, and our Chicago picks for Briant Grant.

supposedly mark jackson is a locker room cancer and that's why he gets moved around so much. last season in utah he tried to lead a mutiny against john stockton. JOHN STOCKTON! he convinced alot of their players that the reason they weren't having success is because stockton didn't know how to utilize them. nba egos being what they are, the jack asses believed him and the brass had to go in and resolve that crisis. he ain't exactly a guy i want acting as a mentor to our young team and i sure don't want them "relating" to a guy like that.

Mark Jackson? PEw's good, great buddy? His rep has always been the exact opposite of your post.

Regarding the original thread -- does it not sound like:
1 there has been little focus on player acquisition
2 that the roster is pretty well set and end of the bench pieces are all that remain

Speaking of which, will there be just two additional players added or as many as five?

My 'guesses' are that the season starts with a 12 man roster, Rick Brunson is 11 and a banger for the 12th (Ty Hill?).

We still have two spots to fill! Realistically we dont have a backup Point Guard, that is if you consider that Moochie is a third string player. We dont have a starting Small Forward! Of course we might still go for Posey but Nachbar is lacking in experience. Glen Rice should be kept in preservative, just incase we need him in the playoffs. I would like to see the 'Bad' man on our Roster so that he is able to get the best coaching and experience, I wouldn't send him back to Europe. Just having him arround should light a fire under Eddie and Mo.T. If he is here he is going to learn English, so when he is needed in a couple of seasons, he will not need training in language and NBA methods. John Lucas could teach him fundamentals if he is still in Houston.

If we did keep Badiane state-side, I would hate for him to sit on the bench all 82 games, lose confidence, and not devleop because he's not playing...See Bostjan Nachbar.

Heavens, they would only teach Badiane fundamentals in Europe. We can't have that!!!

Seriously, JVG and CD are looking for players who would not mind playing every third game. Juaquin Hawkins is that type of player. If available, so is Avery Johnson.

I don't necessarily agree with JVG/CD. Our lack of depth at the 3 is shocking. Piatkowski and Hawkins (if signed) could eat some minutes, but adding another body like TMo may be a good idea.

    CHARLES OAKLEY!!!

We got Pike, he is a calming factor, someone who will have discipline. Now we need Oakley to protect Yao and be an enforcer.

I really like Nailon's offensive game. Kinda similar to Mo Taylor, except he's got more range on his shot, and can play the 3 more naturally than Mo. He's got one of the better mid range games around, IMO.

However, guy doesn't play a lick of D. None at all-in part, he's not really quick enough for 3s, and doesn't have great size for a 4. That is why he found himself out of Charlotte.

I'd like to look at Raja Bell and Dermarr Johnson. Bell is a good defender at the 1 and the 2, and an improving shooter.

Johnson had stud written all over him coming out of college as just a freshman. 6-9, long arms, quick, REALLY athletic, excellent shot mechanics, and good defensive instincts. I recall he wowed the Rockets in workouts, but they couldn't get high enough to draft him. He's coming off a pretty serious injury, but we could use some depth at the 2/3, and I'd definitely take a flyer on a guy with his skills.

Raja Bell, Dermarr Johnson, Stephen Jackson and Jim Jackson are nice options for the 3 if we don't match Posey.

I would also look at Kenny Anderson or Mark Jackson as our backup pg for the veteran minimum.

    The others don't fit.

I would love if we picked up Tyrone Hill or Raja Bell. They play good D, Hill rebounds well, and both are used to getting sporadic pt so they probly wouldn't complain very much. Though if I had to choose between the two, I'd take Bell. Rox need to still pick up Hawkins and TMo though. I say put Rice on the friggin' IR, of course it's not going to happen but he shouldn't be getting much pt. Bell could be Mobley's backup, while Hawkins can spot at the 2 or 3 and TMo spots the 3 or 4, or actually I wouldn't mind TMo starting at the 3 but we do have Pike.
