practically every other post i read lately expresses some mixture of fear and awe with respect to the suddenly almighty dallas mavericks. WHY? Cuban and Nelson? Dallas' other super-hands on owner hasn't had much to show for his efforts lately, and Nelson is the NBA's version of Switzer. I'm not sure the Rockets are going to do much next year, but one thing I am damn sure of is they'll be better than the freaking MAVS. SCREW the MAVS.

I hate to admit it myself JR, but they've got everything but a point guard that's not injury prone.....if he could play all-season, he's pretty decent......and they're better than .500 too......

The Mavs have a good core of players and are definitely a team to watch out for in the coming years if they can keep their nucleus together. Now all they need is good coaching and, yeah, they can be a very good team if not a championship team.

Reunion Arena is a great place to catch a game. I don't know about this year, but the last couple of years I could get some cheap seats near the court.

I'd say that the Mavs are definitely a solid team that should be over .500 and probably in the playoffs. It's hard to argue that they do have talent, even with Don Nelson there to potentially ruin it. [IMG]

    SG Courtney Alexander
    SG/SF Michael Finley
    SF/PF Dirk Nowitzki
    PF Gary Trent
    PF Etan Thomas
    PF Donnell Harvey

They aren't a contender or anything, but those are just a few of the very good or potentially solid young players that they have right now. The Mavs have a lot of talent, and you have to admit they have a good young team too, as much as it might hurt to say it.

They need to get Rodman back. Then they have a chance against the "Fakers"

what the hell are you talking about?
    the mavericks suck.
they have always suck and they will always suck.
jimmy jackson, jamal mashburn, jason kidd
    they still suck.
    Don Nelson is an idiot.
and the rockets beat them three out of four last year.
the mavericks will never be a good team, and i dont need any evidence to back it up. they are the dallas mavericks thats it.
i dont care how many good players they have they will find a way to screw it up.
if you think a team with shawn bradley and steve nash will get anywhere then you are r****ded.
..better than the rockets..you people make me sick.
we will have a better record then the mavericks next year.
    shallow post? really? screw you.
    the mavericks suck

Some of y'all need to tone it down a bit. I don't think anyone in the history of America has ever gotten this worked up over the Mavericks, for Chrissakes.

It's OK, Virgin Suicide....you're gonna be all right...All you have to do is remember to take those puuuurty green pills and to simply think about your "happy place" when you start to feel like you do right now....

Virgin Suicide, just remember what the nice doctors told you...If you're nice, you get an extra cup of pudding...If you're mean, you get another one of those jackets with the really long arms on them

BTW, does this count as an off topic thread yet?? I think I'm ready to take a physical exam an join the serious police...

    maybe....

sure the mavs have a few good players. so does every team in the league, except for the warriors maybe. but -- alexander? not even a top 10 pick. nowitzki? good offensive player with no D whatsoever. Finley - awesome. Trent - serviceable PF. Nelson - r****d.

anybody out there that wants to make a wager on the win differential between the rockets and the mavs next year, let me know. i think you know which side i'm taking.

Unfortunately the Mavs will be a better team next year than the Rocks. Not by too much, but they will be better. Most everyone in their 3 front court positions will be better than ours (with the exception of Bradley). And virgin suicide, just because they've been dominated during the 90's doesn't mean they've always sucked. The Mavericks of the 80's were a pretty decent team. They've got a bright future ahead, even with a wacko coach.

Well, before everyone gets super juiced on the Mavs, I have read where Finley may not be in Dallas past the 2000 season. His K is up and may be looking to land elsewhere. Too early to tell, but if he leaves, its back to mediocrity. btw, new owner or no, that is still one of the worst 5 organizations in the NBA and until they consistently prove otherwise, they'll never be better than a lower echelon playoff team. Hell, the Clips made the playoffs twice in the 90's, it aint hard to do that. But, i don't see them acheiveing what Houston and to a lesser extent San Antonio has done based on whos running the organization presently.

This probably should be in another thread, but here ya go...

I agree that the Rockets may have problems competing for a playoff shot this year. However, if Dan Langhi turns out to be the player I'm hoping he'll turn out to be, I think this season will be a great season to build upon. I'm hoping everyone is underestimating the role Langhi can play in this offense because I don't think it can be stated well enough how much a 6'11" SF with the ability to dribble and shoot bombs as well as drive can do to a defense or to his team's offense. Hopefully what we've been seeing in the off-season games isn't a fluke, but to temper the enthusiasm, he's basically playing against a bunch of scrubs. I still can't believe the guy lasted as long as he did in the draft.

Dallas enjoyed its finest postseason run in 1988. After dumping the Houston Rockets in four games and Denver in six, the Mavericks found themselves in the Western Conference Finals for the first time in team history. All that stood between Dallas and the NBA Finals were the defending NBA-champion Lakers. The Mavericks gave the Lakers all they could handle in the series, but Los Angeles's playoff experience prevailed. The Lakers won the seventh and deciding game, 117-102.
Is that what you mean by evidence?

And hey, the Mavs didn't lose a single game throughout the '70s. Can the Rockets say that? I didn't think so. [IMG]

if you dont have any championship banners hanging from your rafters...you suck. losing in the western conference finals doesn't impress me at all. the mavericks franchise has nothing to be proud of. thats why they made such a big deal about AC green when he broke that record. how long was he a maverick? not long. that franchise has nothing to look back on to be excited about. oh wait except losing in the western conference finals..not the nba finals the conference finals...which means they dont even have a banner at all. just ac greens exciting record game in a row breaking banner. is that success? they go to the finals once and they lose? thats all they have to show for from so many years in the league? give me break. theyre pathetic. and it will never end. they suck. theyre one of the worst franchises in the league. and they will be forever.

virgin suicide took the words out of my mouth!

Both Dallas and Houston are going to be powerhouses offensively. It's basically going to come down to D. The only guys playing D for Dallas will be Etan Thomas and Michael Finley. We got Kelvin Cato, maybe Hakeem, and Shandon. I like our chances. We will be the better team next year, the year after, and the century after that.

I tell you what I'd give up anybody other than francis or hakeem to get finley. And if he's going to be a FA after this year the mavs might look to deal.
