I tried to find a way to fit this into one of the "finals" threads, but it didn't really work. I was trying to figure out why I like Tayshaun's game so much, and I finally figured it out. He has a lot in common with one of my favorite players of all time: Bobby Jones (primarily of the Sixers in the 1980s). Bobby was incredibly smart, and he seemed to always do just the right thing at the right time, though his stats were never that impressive. Jones was 6'9" and 210 lbs. A skinny tough guy who ended up on three all star teams and 10 all-defensive teams by the time he was done. He got more blocked shots than he had any right to get, and he once led the NBA in steals. He's been totally forgotten, since he had much more famous teammates (like Julius Erving). Clearly, Tayshaun has a ways to go before he can really be compared to Bobby, but they have the same frame, the same skills, and it seems to me, the same mentality. Bobby Jones' career stats (step to Bobby's skillz and get your nutsack pwned!) Anyone remember Bobby? What do y'all think Tayshaun will turn into over the next decade?
ya know, I was just thinking that. Didn't Bobby check Larry? They overlapped enough, time wise, and those teams definitely kept meeting in the playoffs. Wish I could find the stats on that matchup.
We've been discussing that on the Nugs board (where Jones is still considered a stud), and there are tons of jokes flying about how Jones shut him down so hard Larry must have made him an honorary ethnicity.
Tay needs to be more aggressive on offense. He also needs to learn how to go right. He almost never goes that direction. He's a bit streaky overall offensively. Great defender always though (Richard Jefferson gives him fits, but that's about it). He's a great team player. And he always plays better when the game is on the line. Clutch.
Thanks, Mo. What a thread. Nuggets4, that's pretty funny. Bobby started his career at Denver for a couple of years there, if I recall. Actually, I think he was drafted by the Rockets in the first place.
Yup, traded him and Ralph Simpson for George McGinnis. A lot of die-hard Nugs fans still lament for the days of Bobby.
He could be the next Bob. Horry in second season: 9.91 PPG .93 blocks 2.85 assists 5.43 rebounds .458% Prince in second season: 10.3 PPG .84 blocks 2.3 assist 4.8 rbs .467%
Of course you know he was a Rocket's #1 draft pick who eschewed the NBA and Houston for the ABA and Denver. Ouch!
