Now that the home run record has fallen, whether it was legit or not, I got to wondering what sports records are safe, i.e. meaning they will probably never be broken. To me, 2 things come to my mind right away: Cy Young winning 511 games in his career Joe DiMaggio's 56 game hitting streak I do think it is possible for someone to break DiMaggio's record, but it will be extremely hard to do so. But 511 wins?? Forget about it - no one is going to come close to breaking that one. I'll also throw out hitting .400 for a season - hasn't been done since Ted Williams in 1941. Any other records you think will go unbroken?
Three words: Johnny Vander Meer. Cy Young's career wins and Wilt's 100 points are another couple of locks. Rickey's career stolen bases also looks very safe. And Otto Graham's making the championship game in all 11 seasons as a professional athlete, winning 8 titles.
Alex Rodriguez is currently on pace to break that record as well as the RBI record, runs scored, and homeruns. I doubt he ends up doing all of those (might not do any of them to be honest), but Rose's record doesn't seem unreachable to me. Cy Young's career win total. Charley Radbourn's single season win total. Nolan Ryan's strikeout total.
The 7 no-hitters by Nolan Ryan and the back to back no-hitters by Johnny Vander Meer are great calls. 54 steals of home is an insane amount.
With his style of play and being in the AL, I at least think he'll be the quickest to 3,000 ever. 511 wins has got to be the most untouchable record. That's more than most pitch in a career.
