I know the new year is still young, but I've been thinking on what I'll remember the most about 2005 in years to come. For me, music is the most powerful form of nostalgia. For instance, I'll always remember listening to "Satellite" by Dave Matthews band as I was driving away from my high school on the last day Senior year. I remember the first girl I ever had a crush on (in Kindergarten) and how every time I hear "Uptown Girl", I still think about her. I think the defining album of the year (for me anyway) is definitely the "American Idiot" album by Green Day, but especially "Boulevard of Broken Dreams". What songs will you remember the most about 2005?
Sitting by the pool as the sun faded away in late October, knowing that first cold front was on the way and my hot, sunny pool days were over for quite a while...then "Wake Me Up When September Ends" came on and a tear was brought to LonghornFan's eye. I'm here waiting for you Summer. I love you.
That's why so many crappy songs suddenly become 'good' 15 years after their release. That said, if I ever hear an album by "Pong" (local band) again, I will immediately think of the events of 2005. Same could probably be said for TV on the Radio's album.
"Come back to Texas" - Bowling for Soup. When we would take the kids swimming last summer we always had that cd on for them.
Rob Thomas - Lonely No More (described the way I was feeling about someone at the time... "just another heartache on my list" as it turned out to be) Green Day (both songs already mentioned) U2 - City of Blinding Lights (some of the more hopeful things I was feeling toward the end of 2005)
Chance's Beltran song. Not sure if it was 2005, but it really made me feel better after the whole Beltran fiasco. "F**k it, we will be OKAAAAAAAY" Truer words were never spoken.
No one said that the album had to actually be released in the actual calender year of 2005. Heck, the defining band of 1992 for me was Queen. Just play along!
Although this song did not come out in 2005, I feel it sums up my 2005: (Fatty that is what the thread is about - what song reminds you of 2005, not that it came out in 2005 or at least I think that is the case) "The Show Must Go On" by Queen
*sigh*, I guess you're right, although, 10 years from now, most people will associate 2005 with music that was released in 2005. Maybe not, though. Maybe I'm just anal with knowing the year a current hit came out. However, I first "discovered" the Ramones in 1989, so their music will always remind me of that year. I was too young when that music originally came out.
I think 2005 will be remembered as the year Houston artists broke out on the national scene; also, the Cham and Paul Wall tracks made in honor of the Astros' improbable run in October. Great year, I miss it already...
Man... I guess it just goes to show the ridiculous state of American music these days. I just looked at the Top 100 Pop Songs of 2005 list, and 3 of the top 4 belong to Kelly Clarkson. No wonder 2005 will have a hard time being remembered.
2005 wasn't much different than 2004. Both were pretty crappy. The song that I think of is the mp3 file that combined two Nickelback songs on top of each other revealing that they were basically the same song. It demonstrates how much crap music has been vomited up by big business music companies in the past few years. Overall, music from 2005 and 2004 was complete crap.
