What kind of moves would you look to make if you were Danny Ferry? Here are my initial thoughts: Spoiler 1. Unite Lebron with an earlier prototype of Lebron (a.k.a. Ron Artest). A pair of 270 lb wings would be devastating. 2. Failing that, try to get some perimeter size another way. Mo Evans, Matt Barnes, whoever. Maybe Jackson or Maggette from GSW? 3. See if anyone is available to bother Dwight Howard. Varejao is a bit too light, the rest of my bigs are too old. Ben Wallace's expiring contract will be something to make use of. Lets see if some financially unstable team would start dumping salaries.
I know Mike Brown won coach of the year, but honestly after watching the Cavs run their "offense" during the playoffs, they need to make some changes. Either a new coach, or a new offensive playbook would be good. The Cavs' role players are not all-stars, but I think they would look a lot better in an offense with a little more player and ball-movement. Lebron going 1-on-5 while everyone stands around is not going to get it done. LeBron was amazing in the high post, but imagine if the guys around him actually moved and cut to the basket, etc?
Ilgauskas and Varejao have player options and Szczerbiak is a free agent. I don't know if they will have the cap room but would they be desperate enough to consider Carlos Boozer after what he did to them? Because they sure could use a big man with his skills.
They need a big man who can score in the low post. They don't have that. Wally's $13mm is off the books, but I can see Z taking his $11mm option and Varejo taking his $6mm option.
Mike Brown got exposed badly. It goes to show how incredibly stupid the voters are for all of the awards. It's only rational to think that if you're coaching the MVP (and according to the media the best player ever) you're going to win a lot of games. So which is it? Either Lebron isn't that good (but he is) or Mike Brown is an average coach who lucked out in landing a basketball freak of nature.
At SG they need size and a legit scorer, plus a decent post defender that can rebound and run. I think they will have plenty of room under the cap this summer. Mo Williams is a good fit at PG but he crumbled in the post-season. At PF, they mostly need athleticism and defense. A low-post scorer would help but isn't essential. Where are the people who said LeBron had a good supporting cast?
I agree that Brown didn't make any adjustments to speak of, but no one outside of Delonte West played well. LJ's supporting cast isn't that great and none of them played very well in the series.
Neither. Flawed rosters get exposed in crucible of the playoffs. Age, lack of athleticism and Mo Williams shooting meltdown doomed the Cavs against a hot-shooting Magic. If Rafer hadn't gone 6/12 from long-range in game 5, the Cavs would have won it and game 7 would be Monday. I've been on his case very hard since he become coach of the Cavs, but I don't think Mike Brown was the problem against the Magic. Their bench turned into complete trash.
i think they need to move to a more up tempo offense. i would focus on the PF spot. the perimeter players are fine. they can defend and shoot. mo williams can create for himself taking some pressure off of lebron there. they could use a spread 4. i'm thinking along the lines of troy murphy. averages a double double with over two 3's a game. the pacers might be happy to get murphy off the books for big bens contract. boris diaw is another spread 4 who gets just over one 3 a game, but can really create for others like very few forwards can. shawn marion and al harrington also fit the bill.
