Listening to JVG's suggested rule changes on TV made me think of what rules I'd like to see changed next season. I was just thinking about double technicals. No freethrows are given to either team the way it is now. I think they should give each team one free throw. Best case is each team both misses or makes their free throw and its tied anyways. Worst case is one team makes their FT and the other misses, giving a one point advantage. Also lets assume that the double tech came from one player on each side. They both have to take their FT. But lets assume a non-player gets called for a tech like a coach in a double tech situation. The opposing team gets to pick who they want to take the FT (The worst FT shooter on the opposing team.) Second suggestion involves the jump ball. TNT and ABC use wired cameras that are above the court to get different angles of the game being played. My suggestion is to set up a wired ball holder similar to the cameras I spoke of to avoid controversy the way the refs are currently assigned to do it. The ball would simply drop down from the wire holder that releases it, and it would drop straight center between the two players. No controversy about whether the ball reached its apex, or if the toss was uneven to one player over the other. The toss would be perfect. Third suggestion is a new stat called hockey assist. JVG has brought it up, and I think it'd be a great addition.
Your first idea - the idea of technical fouls is NOT to give a team the chance for a point, it's to discourage players from getting out of control The league needs to add a shot clock review more than anything else Also, even though it probably won't be happening next year, I think the NBA should start some kind of red-flag system like the one in the NFL That should stop all these controversial game-changing calls and teams arguing that officiating sucks
Why give technicals at all then? If its a single tech, you get a FT. If its a double tech I don't see why they wouldn't allow FTs then either. It would still take two techs to get ejected. That penalty would still be there.
I like the perfect jump ball idea. It would eliminate bad tosses and give Yao Ming a big advantage for jump balls- instead of one of the league's worst jump ballers Yao would become one of the best.
What I would change: If the defensive team gets to a loose ball when the 24-second shot clock expires, the refs shouldn't blow the whistle. The team that played great defense should not be penalized. This would be a discretionary thing for the officials. Kind of like when a player mouths off to a ref while the other team has a fast break going. The ref usually waits until the other team scores before blowing the whistle and assessing the T.
changed hand check, the zone defense and illegal defense back to the old rules. the current ones are so gai. also, no joey crawford for rockets games!
Take away the hand checking rule is the one I really want to change for next season. I like the 80s and 90s rules a lot better than today's sissy and double standard rules.
Why doesn't George Carl have Melo or Birdman toss the ball in? The first game, it should have been Melo through in to Billups and tonight, since Melo was out, it should have been Birdman. K-Mart, even though he has been much better this year, still makes a lot of bone-headed plays. You don't want someone who makes bone-headed plays throwing an inbound pass under pressure. Good game and good series. Fun time for a basketball fan even if the Rockets are out.
Ron would be a beast with the old school hand checking rules!! Dude could funnel the offensive player wherever he needed to.
On any non-shooting foul in the penalty, give the offense the option of taking the ball out on the side instead of taking the free throws.
Biggest rule change due? CONSISTENCY! Consistency at both ends of the floor. Consistency at any place on the floor. Consistency to any player - position they play or seniority or status. BTW, get rid of the stupid restrict area, that midgets just throwing body at bigs at will without any chance to make a play to "draw" a foul. Get rid of the stupid idea of "initiating contact to draw fouls", and of course do something about flopping.
agree with the technical foul for flopping and allowing the hand check. I mean they do allow defenders to bear hug yao, a hand check is nothing compared to that. It all makes too much sense though.
Only 10 flops allowed per game. I am not sure if the league is ready to go to No flopping rule yet. Too drastic of a change. 1/4 of the NBA players will be without jobs. Oh, and a technical to Anderson Verajao as soon as he steps on the court. Just as a warning.
Add another ref, the current three blind mice isn't cutting it. I've always hated the charging foul. Too hard to officiate, higher chance of players getting hurt and it isn't a real form of defence.
I'd make all players pass a fingernail test before each game. Too much scratching going on. More accountability on referees. Complete public disclosure on all referee activities (investigations, discipline actions, policies, communications, ... everything). I see no reason at all for any of that to be private. To be private just reeks of conspiracy. Replay can be used to see if a foul occurred on the last play of a game.
