There are some things that aren't recorded during games such as: charges drawn, shots altered (wouldn't be easy to tell), or maybe even screens set etc... What would you like to see added as a new statistic to the game?
I would be interested in seeing a per-game PER as an all-inclusive summarization of each player's box score line. Would probably be more useful/informative than the +/- stat that is included these days. I think adding PER next to minutes played would instantly tell who was productive in their minutes on the floor and who stunk it up, without having to scan through points, fg%, oreb, dreb, ast, to etc.
Flops. It would be denoted as 'FL' in the box score. One of the Jazz would likely lead the league in FPG.
What you're describing is something Hollinger came up with years ago called a Game Score Rating. Basketball-reference tracks it in their player game logs. You can see their daily stat leaders, which they rank by the game score rating: http://www.basketball-reference.com/friv/dailyleaders.cgi?month=11&day=23&year=2009 The formula is only slightly more complicated than the NBA EFF on NBA.com: PTS + 0.4 * FG - 0.7 * FGA - 0.4*(FTA - FT) + 0.7 * ORB + 0.3 * DRB + STL + 0.7 * AST + 0.7 * BLK - 0.4 * PF - TOV
Just like there are FGM, FGA, 3PA, 3PA, FTM, FTA ... it seems reasonable for their to be "assist" equivalents. Example: AstFGM: assists on made field goals (equivalent to what we know as "assists" today) AstFGA: assists on attempted field goals Ast3PM: assists on made 3-pointers Ast3PA: assists on attempted 3-point field goals AstFTM: for each made free throw following an assisted attempted shot AstFTA: for each attempted free throw following an assisted attempted shot The Rockets track something called "true assists", which I imagine would be something like the following (in terms of the above): True Assist = AstFGM + 0.5*Ast3PM + 0.5*AstFTM But with AstFGA, Ast3PA, and AstFTA, you could also see how often the player made a pass that led directly to a potential point scored. Another stat that could be interesting to track is something I'll call a fast break trigger: anytime a player gets a steal, blocked shot, or defensive rebound that results in a fast break point scored, they should get some sort of credit for that.
That's a good one. hoopdata.com tracks it, btw. http://www.hoopdata.com/defrebstats.aspx?team=%&type=tot&posi=%&yr=2010&gp=0&mins=0 As far as team stats, I wish they'd officially track fast break points. Its not summarized anywhere.
BAD CALLS by individual referees. Fans whine about the refs all the time but we need some substantial stats to prove their incompetence.
I think another good one is something similar to an assist, but the player receiving the pass doesn't have to make the basket to have it count for the assister, as long as they get fouled during shooting then it counts. I think a lot of times people feed other players good passes but they get fouled and the passer gets no credit!
Turnovers forced. If you are guarding your man and you force a turnover(traveling like Ariza did against the Hawks) or take a charge. If you pressure a passer and it leads to a bad pass(as opposed to a lazy pass that gets picked off) that is stolen, that should count for the on ball defender. Also, hard defense on a post player that results in a 3 seconds(either not allowing position, or holding steady while he struggles to make his move in the alloted 5 - er 3 seconds.) Contested shots. If you got a hand in the guy's face before the ball is released(as opposed to after like sometimes happens) you get one. Blocks also count(kinda like sacks count as tackle for loss in NCAA.
Going with turnovers forced is a good idea. Charges drawn can go into this category, only thing is charges drawn won't be an individual statistic.
Deflections I think would be a good one to add too. It can lead to steals, but just generally disrupting and offense, I think it would be a good defensive stat to add.
I would like to combine steals, blks and charges drawn all into a TOs Forced category. deflections could be a telling defensive stats as well. Flops made would welcomed too.
