I was so happy when The Lord of the Rings came out, for a number of reasons: it was a fantastic and classic story, it had a superb cast, it had a dedicated director who was a huge Rings fan in Peter Jackson, and he vowed to make a movie worthy of the story. But the #1 reason I was so happy to see LOTR, it that it brought respect to my favorite genre: Fantasy. The LOTR got Hollywood to actually take the genre seriously instead of belching out the usual kiddy-stuff. I did like The Never Ending Story as a fantasy movie, but I'm talking more about movies for adults, not the kiddy stuff. I detested movies like DragonHeart and the fairly-recent Dungeons & Dragons movie for a number of reasons: The "dragon" looked more like a dinosaur with wings; during the beginning of the movie when Dennis Quaid's character was on horse-back chasing a dragon and killing it with a bow and arrows....god, I knew this movie was crap from the beginning. When imagining a mythical beast like a dragon with all its power and magic being chased and killed by a guy on a horse.....I mean come the f**k on. Not to mention all of the "touching moments" between Quaid's character and the dragon later in the film....puke. And the D&D movie pissed off quite a few fans when, rather than making a movie about the D&D world, they made a movie about supposedly "real-life" guys all of a sudden being in the D&D world. People are into role-playing games so that they can imagine themselves in the world itself, not themselves as they are in real-life suddenly waking up and finding themselves there. Anyway, I didn't mean to rant on movies I didn't like, but rather talk about movies I'd like to see made based on my favorite storys and novels. If I have to live with only Tolkien movies, that's fine by me. I'd like to see Jackson make The Hobbit, and I'd also like to see another Tolkien classic: The Silmarillion. My all-time favorite series is the DragonLance novels by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. I'd love to see an adaptation of the first two DragonLance trilogies: DragonLance: Chronicles and DragonLance Legends. I'd also really like to see someone (NOT George Lucas) make the Timothy Zahn post-Return of the Jedi novels into movies: Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising and The Last Command. That'd be damn cool. So the question is: What favorite books/storys of yours would you like to see make it to the Silver Screen?
I wouldn't mind seeing a movie about a killer robot driving instructor who travels back in time for some reason.
I wouldn't mind seeing a movie about a killer robot driving instructor who travels back in time for some reason, in a world where every girl has a twin (for some reason)...
Ender's Game would make a great movie. However, if Frankie Munoz, a Culkin sibling, Hillary Duff, any of the Olsen Twins, Britney Spears' little sister, any of the kids from Spy Kids, etc. are in it, I won't see it. I think Haley Joel Osment would be pretty good as Andrew Wiggins.
I would like to see a faithful version of the Three Musketeers made. I would also like to see a good version of Arthur Conan Doyle's the White Company made as well. Then I would like to see other faithful versions of Dumas' four books that come after the Three Musketeers, and end with a good version of The Man in the Iron Mask.
The Legend of Huma The Icewind Dale Trilogy The Death Gate Cycle (that would actually be at least 7 movies) Some BattleTech movies, but not like RobotJox The aforementioned Chronicles and Legends trilogies Caverns of Socrates The Mythadventures of Aahz and Skeeve All of the tales of Mithgar or at least the Hel's Crucible duology, Iron Tower Trilogy and Silver Call duology All things Shadowrun, which has the real Matrix in it
The Death of Superman...All the events leading to his death. The sequel can be the return of Superman. Spinoffs can be the Green Lantern turns into Parallax.
The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant... ...also, a note on the Silmarillion...I don't think this would make a good theater release...It's just too long and the stories that make it up are rather seperate and disjointed. I think the Silmarillion would be great as a mini-series, with a series of 5-10 2 hour movies, such as how Sci Fi did Dune, or how the break up of Band of Brothers was pulled off. I think that would be the way to go on this one.
How about a group of Basketball fans that waste countless amounts of money for their employers by spending the majority of their workdays talking B-Ball and politics on a BBS.
