To me, its the ability to absolutely destroy teams that try cover them without a double team. This is why Yao at one point was a borderline superstar and Kevin Martin isn't despite the huge numbers Martin puts up. This is also why many considered Francis as a borderline superstar during his prime despite a fairly low scoring average.
players who play with consistency and get their stats regardless of the opponents defensive strategy, I would never consider Yao a superstar because he can easily be stopped
su·per·star (spr-stär) n. 1. A widely acclaimed star, as in movies or sports, who has great popular appeal. 2. One that is extremely popular or prominent or that is a major attraction. It has to do with popularity, not ability
No, he could not be easily stopped. If you're talking about fronting him then it's not his fault. Blame it on the person trying to pass him the ball. Yao IS a superstar or was before his foot injury. Yao could easily score even if 3 people guarded him.
team's alpha dog. Consistent and upstoppable production. Rediculous stats Lots of awards: first or second NBA teams, MVPs, all defensive teams
One metric that might be used, aside from some obvious things, is the "25/10 rule." If you are a big man and average 25 points and 10 boards, or a guard who averages 25 points and 10 assists, then you would probably be looked upon as a "super star." (yes, I just made that up, or can't recall if I've read it before!)
This. Also, Pushes his team deep into playoffs every year Commands respect in the league Popularity is huge (notice I don't say likability) Status as the franchise leader To me, I hate how people throw around the term superstar. There aren't many of them in the league right now. Maybe 3 or 4. When I think of "superstars," I think of Jordan, Magic, Kareem, Hakeem, etc. There aren't many of them. And every "superstar" should be considered undisputedly on the top 25-50 players who ever played. tm
A player who can make his team win without having to score over 20 points. . a defensive stopper and one who can take his team deep into the playoffs
