Moderators can merge this thread if they feel it's necessary, but with the clutter of PF threads on the main forum I wanted to get a rough idea of the type of player the Rockets should be looking at. Obviously Houston has to look at what goes on in the draft/free agency and play their cards accordingly, but it's nice to have a general idea of what they want.

    A. Sign/trade for solid team defenders with 3 point range, below average rebounders and man-to-man defenders:

    Examples...

Matt Barnes (Can be had for the full MLE, some would say that's overpaying him as he is a system player).
Andres Nocioni (Will demand a little more than the MLE, so we would have to obtain him via a sign-and-trade).
    Linas Kleiza

    B. Sign/trade for a clearcut defensive presence or rebounder that can handle his own man

    Examples...

    Reggie Evans
    Jeff Foster
    Etan Thomas
    Udonis Haslem
    Anderson Varejao
Nick Collison (played much better against PF's than C's)

    C. Look to the draft and lesser names in free agency to rotate at the 4 with Chuck Hayes:

    Examples...

    Mikki Moore
    Darko Milicic
    Sean Williams
    Josh McRoberts

    D. Obtain a skilled SF that has the potential to play minutes at the 4.

    Examples...

    Ron Artest
    Rashard Lewis
    Gerald Wallace
    Ruben Patterson
    Jared Jeffries

    E. Bring in a veteran who can do a decent job as a traditional 4.

    Examples...

    PJ Brown
    Kurt Thomas
    Joe Smith

    F. Give up valuable pieces to bring in a scoring PF, above-average rebounders, possibly with a huge contract

    Examples...

    Zach Randolph
    David West

    G. Bring back players from the good old days

    Examples...

    Maurice Taylor
    Kenny Thomas
    Eddie Griffin
    Pete Chilcutt

My guess is the Rockets will do "E". Bring in a veteran PF singed to a cheap(low year) deal to platoon with Hayes, Novak, Reed etc.

You can add Marc Jackson,Corliss Williamson, Najera(trade), Matt Bonner to that list of Joe Smith, and PJ Brown. Also, (although not a PF) Chris Mihm might be someone Adelman would like to back up Yao.

Somehow I just get the feeling they won't use the MLE on one player. They will make trades to gather the single impact players and use the MLE/LLE to fill in the holes.

and outside of a trade this is probably our best option.

platooning a bunch of bangers to ware down opposing PFs as well as a couple finesse guys to mix things up. you might not be able to stop the elite PFs in the league, but you sure can beat on them.

Walter Herrmann + Ryan Gomes, both play defense, can hit from 3P-land, average to above average rebounders, starting material players.

Draft could make both redundant on their respective teams.

Herrmann could cost too much in assets and he's an expiring contract with no bird rights.

Gomes is undersized at 6-7 but is 250 pounds. Height is a disadvantage but lower center of gravity could make up for it.

Magloire isn't a 4 but he has played at that spot and can rebound, shotblock and might be able to bang a bit too. I think he would a better choice than Mihm.

They are both below average rebounders for the 4 spot. Their rebounding rates are similar to Bonzi Wells and Tracy McGrady, strong rebounding SF's... but way behind the Hayes, Haslems and Varejaos.

    Either A or F.

I think Adelman’s system calls for 5 legitimate scoring threats to be on the floor at all times and having a defensive minded 4 with limited offensive ability along with an offensively limited 3 (Battier) will not work.

The league reb avg for PF was 4.7rebs.

    Gomes avg 5.6rebs.

Herrmann avg 2.9rebs for the season but mostly played garbage minutes that skewed his numbers. In the last 17 where played starting minutes and started 12 of those games he avg 5.5rebs.

Which is why those statistics don't give you an accurate gauge on how well those players can rebound. You are looking at the per 48 minutes of players playing on lottery teams down the stretch of the season. Stats that have fooled people into thinking Eddy Curry and Hakim Warrick are not terrible rebounders.

"Rebound rate is an estimate of the percentage of missed shots a player rebounded while he was on the floor." If you doubt it's accuracy, take a look at this list and tell me where the undersized per-48 minute "above average" rebounders like Hermann and Gomes fall in comparison to strong rebounders like Chuck Hayes (not listed but his RbR is 17.5): http://www.knickerblogger.net/stats/2007/jh_ALL_REB.htm

I never called them strong rebounders or compared them to Hayes who is one of the top rebounders in the league.

IMO it's important to note above average rebounders won't get outhustled/outplayed consistently by a guy like Paul Millsap attacking every loose ball in the playoffs... whereas your mediocre rebounders don't stand a chance unless they get a lucky bounce.

B or E would be the wise choice. I'd bet that Adelman would rather have A, though.

I doubt either team will draft players to make them redundant. Charlotte and Boston like both of those players and believe that they can be part of a playoff team. It would take a lot of players or future picks to get either player.

with bonzi, head, snyder, novak, vspan and james, we have enough guys who can help yao and tmac score. granted if we can get a PF that can score that'd be great, but...

bottom line is we need someone who can help yao rebound and patrol the paint down low.

3 end-of-bench players (Snyder, Novak, Spanoulis), a guard that can’t dribble (Head), and 2 volatile players that did squat last season (Bonzi, James). If we head into next season with those being the only “playmakers” we have next to Yao and Mcgrady we’re in a heap load of trouble.

It should also be noted that Ryan Gomes has a 7'2 wingspan.

Josh MacRoberts may be a player can match our new system.
