Everyone knows this has been a really terrible year. The games have been mostly not fun to watch particularly because more than half of them ended in losses. I've caught myself watching more NCAA this year just to help remind me what excitement is. What I'd like to know is why you still hang on? I don't think "I'm a fan and I love my team" is really sufficient. What I want to know is what about watching games that are sometimes more like train wrecks than basketball games keeps you into it? Is it a player? Is it the stunning uniforms? Are you a masochist? Seriously, what (or who) keeps you watching the games, reading the basketball section of the newspaper, scanning the web for stories about the Rockets, listening to radio talk shows when the coach or a player is the guest and posting on the BBS all about the games?
The fact that I shelled out a bunch of money for the basketball package on DirectTV is what keeps me going. And the fact that I love watching Eddie block shots and KT take the ball to the hoop.
2 things....one, I am in the semi finals of my fabtasy hoops league against a guy who has Francis...two, i am rooting for us to lose and get a better pick (sorry but its true)
I guess for me I really like the game of basketball. Also I personally feel like this team isn't as bad as it's record shows. I feel like they can compete with any team on any night given that they're on their game. Another thing that helps is the belief that we're not damned to NBA purgatory. I don't think Mo and Glen are the end all/final piece, but I do believe we're on the right track. I watch the games now to get a feel of what the future holds for us. It's really encouraging when the boys play smart. Bottom line- I'm watching to pass the time and monitor improvement. Also, think of how much more meaningful it will be when we're a contender and a good team after these frustrating times. Weather the storm and the sun and rainbow will come.
Two things...I love to watch Eddie Griffin. He has had some off games lately, but he has a flair for the spectacular block, and I love those!! And being a coach, I watch the games with my sons so that I can point things out to them. When I see a good pick being set, or a good jump shot, I points those things out. And don't laugh, but I have picked up some good wrinkles for a two-man game watching Rudy's offense! Plus, it's the Rockets. Hell, I watched the Oilers all those years....these games are far less painful!
1. I care about the Rockets winnning or losing more than any other team in professional or collegiate sports. 2. I enjoy watching players develop from the beginning. If I stopped watching them for five years, and then all of a sudden I started watching them again when they were good, I don't think I would enjoy it as much as if I was supporting the team from the beginning. 3. I'll admit that if the Rockets are having a bad game, sometimes I'll do something else like read or surf the internet with the Rockets game in the background. But when they are playing good they're an exciting team to watch. 4. Potential! I still see potential for these players to improve: Francis, Mobley, Taylor, Thomas, Cato, Griffin. And I wanna be watching when they do. 5. I got nuthin' better to do.
Good thread. I watch because to look for possible 40 point performances by Rocket players. I watch because of tod the bod's first reason. Even though, the team sucks, they are not boring like the Hawks or Cavs. Boy, do I feel sorry for those fans. Kelvin Cato alleyoop finishes never suck.
I watch because I'm interested in seeing player and team development. I look forward to the day Eddie G puts the ball on the floor and dribble drive for a monster, one hand dunk. I look and hope that Steve, Cat and Mooch have finally learned that you can't dribble through a double team without turning the ball over. I watch in hopes of seeing ball movement as oppose to dribbling out the shot clock. Is this the game that Cato displays some low post moves? I'm a hopeless Rockets Junkie.
I watch looking for a spark of hope, to see bits and pieces of good play that I would like see come together. Did you ever notice on the rare occasion when the Rockets pass the ball well they can be really fun to watch. They even win some when they pass. I hope it all comes together soon.
i too watch for that spark of hope. but also because on any given night something extraordinary can happen. 50 points from any single player, cato breaking the record for most blocks in a game or just a complete and total a$$ wuppin against somebody (prefereably the jazzholes) you know the game im talking about...we lead from the start we shot over 60%, everyone gets involved, we dont go through 7 min dry spells. the kind of game that doesnt elevate my heart pressure. you may say there's no fun in blowouts but i disagree. what can be better that 4 quaters of basketball bliss...
Great thread Jeff ! I pay attention because I grew up a Rockets fan, and care more about them winning and losing then any other sports team. I simply love the game of basketball, and still play it on a weekly basis. I do get frustrated, as I enjoy a more heady version of the game then this current team plays, but I do see improvment and when that light bulb collectively goes off...WATCH OUT !! GO Rockets !! DaDakota
Every time I watch them I say, "Dammit! I am not going to watch this sucky basketball team ever again! It sucks!" Then the next day I am turning on the TV and "enjoying" another sucky basketball game by this sucky team. Sorry Jeff. I can't give an answer to the love.
Jeff, Good question.. I kept asking that same question myself few times. I never played basketball, never payed attention to basketball before I came to US( '94. the only players I knew before that were Magic and MJ). I didnot even know the rules of the game or that there are teams other than Bulls and Lakers. Yet I have been a Rockets fan for past seven years and NBA league pass subscriber for past 3 years. the only games I watch are Rocket's (and sometimes Toronto, since Dream's been there). Biggest reason has to be Hakeem. The year I started following Bball, DREAM was awesome. But sometime in these seven years I became a Rockets fan. Following Rockets has become a part of my life. I think its because I assosciate myself with the Team. Rockets is like My Team. When they loose, or keep making some dumb mistakes, its agonizing. I get frustrated, angry and upset. But then again the next game starts with all new hope. I get all excited by the time of tipoff. To me its like, Rockets win every game, before tipoff. There hasn't been one single game that I thought they were going to loose.(even when they were with a incomplete roster of 8 or 9 players)
I'll echo some of the responses already. I watch because of hope. When I watch the Rockets, I see signs of greatness that lead me to believe that this team, with time, will be a contender. With players like Francis, Mobley, Griffin, Thomas, and Cato plus Rice, lottery pick, Taylor next year, this team should finally be both exciting and good. So, the fact that it's not a hopeless situation keeps me going to Aussies!!
I pay attention because to me the Rockets are intruiging. Francis is i hope a soon to be special player. He can do it all shoot, dribble, give you some highlight reel dunks over somebody, and brings some emotion to the game. Right now i don't consider the Rockets as a whole and Francis in particular as a finished product but more like a work in progress, so hopefully when the mental part of their games catches up with their physcial part i can sit back and laugh at the time when Francis would have 6-7 turnovers a game, they start out the game already down by 10 or my personal favorite{sarcasm} start out hot but come the 4th quarter they can't buy a basket. So i guess what i'm saying is I see the potential in this team to be something good Just a lil side note...my old highschool coach use to. "Potential gets coaches fired"
I've been watching for over 20 years and it's just in my blood. I've really enjoyed watching KT,Griff and the new found effort that Cato has been giving.I also love the last second shots from Mooch and the fact that this team never gives up.
As pessimistic and realistic as I am most of the time, there is always a little optimist in me thinking that a turn for the better is close at hand. The two championships put that optimist in me, and I don't think it'll ever go away. And right now, I don't mind the losses so much. I would really like them to land a top 6 pick. And yeah, even if they'll manage to mess that up, I'll find a reason to get excited about our prospects for next year.
