I'm not being morbid or anything, but I heard a lot of people talking about the Empire State building and talking about how it was evacuated, is it the biggest, or is the Sears building the biggest? They need to put the best security in the world on the Empire State building because it could be a target now.
Sears Tower is considerably taller than Empire State Building (well, 200 feet taller). The Twin Towers were also taller than the Empire State Building. Nothing in the US is taller than Sears.
From a search : Sears Tower was the tallest in the US even before the WTC collapse. The WTC Towers #1 & #2 were the 2nd and 3rd tallest in the US and the Empire State Building was the 4th. The Sears Tower is currently the 3rd tallest building in the world I believe.
Doesn't H-town have some tall buildings? I'm not saying they're gonna go after H-town, this is just for my personal knowledge.
Ahhh my subject of expertise Americas tallest 1 Sears, Chicago, 1454ft tall 2+3 WTC1,@ New york 1368, 1362 feet tall 4 Empire state, NY 1250ft tall 5 Amoco chicago, 1136 6 John Hancock center chicago, 1127ft 7 Crystler building, ny, 1046ft 8 Nations bank, Atlanta, 1023 9 first interstate world center(AKA the library tower) Los Angeles 1018ft 10 Texas commerce tower Houston 1000ft even so houston had the 10th tallest american building, now has 8th tallest 11 two prudential plaza chicago 978 12first interstate bank Houston 972ft so houston has#8, and 10 now also transco tower in houston is 901 ft and is americas 17th tallest or so
As a kid (ten years ago) I did something stupid and decided to see how high I could go in the Transco tower before someone stopped me and after trying I went all the way to the base of the spotlight at the very top...Of course coming down, a lady asked me "can I help you" in a what the hell are you doing here type of tone. And that was it! While all the security isn't foolproof, tell me how can this be allowed. Maybe it's not that way now. But if I was a wacko trying to do whatever...it was there. It's sad it has come to this of more security but I hope things have changed.

gr8-1, I posted this in another thread, but it answers this question, so... Top three cities in the world with the most "skyscrapers" *(Habital buildings of 500ft or more) 1. New York City - 140 (138 or so now) 2. Chicago - 68 3. Houston & Hong Kong - 36
Actually that list of the World's Tallest is wrong. The CN Tower in Toronto, Canada is currently the tallest building in the world at over 1,800 feet. I heard that they were going to build a 2,300 foot structure in Chicago but I'm not sure what ever hapened to those plans.
Lil Pun, We are going to count towers? Then there is something that is higher than your example: KTHI TV-tower Fargo (ND) 629 m (2063 ft.) TV-tower Mango
there have been many egos that proposed massive buildings in various cities in america. trum had dreamed of having the worlds tallest for years, however here innamerica there is a ceiling. for all practical purposes all matter above 2000 is in federal air space. in order to build above 2000 ft in the US requires an act of congress......LITERALY but as far as the examples above these things are in 3 different catagories structures, towers, and buildings buildings is what we as humans interact with most. towers are merely decorations or tourist traps. structures are work horses. only practical use also you should note that that website is terribly inaccurate. i used to check it out alot, but they are way to quick to list a building as fact when it is merely proposed. the building in india for example. also there was this drollo tower in melbourne AU(didnt happen) just take there info with a grain of salt peace
Uh........thanks, but I already knew that. What is the 'tallest structure in the world'? Mango
There are so many ways to interpret all this stuff... there's : 1) What's the tallest building in the world? 2) What's the tallest structure in the world? 3) What's the tallest free-standing structure in the world? 4) What's the tallest tower in the world? As far as I'm concerned if you're talking "tallest" you're talking about radio/tv towers. There are a handful over 2000. If I recall there are a couple of them in Texas.
