My bro-in-law came to visit from California. The family decided to do a day trip to Galveston. It occurred to me that I hadn't been to Galveston in 20 years (because the beaches are so nasty). It now occurs to me that there has got to be better beaches somewhere nearby. So, for a day trip and short drive from Houston, what is the best beach to go to? (By best, I mean a beach which has clean, soft sand, and water that isn't nasty - someplace fun for the family to go and play in the sand and water). -- droxford
south padre or corpus christi but i'm not sure there's enough value added in those beaches to justify the length of the trip over galveston.
Probably nice beaches, but those are too far to drive to, spend the day at, and return to Houston on same day. -- droxford
Cancun... but seriously, Padre Island is really nice...clear water, just sandy...reminds me of Thailand...
Again, I'm talking about a beach that is near enough to visit during a day trip from Houston, and Padre just isn't that. -- droxford
I'm curious why someone from California would want to visit a beach in Houston? It would be like a Texan going to Los Angeles to see a football game...On a (un)related note...what would you recommend in and about the Houston area for your out-of towners?
Museum of Natural Science Texans game Rockets game Restaurants -- something of a local flavor A Christmas Carol at the Alley Theater also depends on the age of the people visiting..if there are kids, add the space center to that list.
Every time I'm in Galveston. Great food! Galveston gets a bad rep for its beach, and deservedly so. But the strand is fun, there are alot of historical victorian houses from the turn of the century to see, and good seafood. Corpus has pretty nice beaches, but again not a short trip - would take you 3 1/2 hours probably each way. What you're looking for, in the immediate Houston vicinity, doesn't exist, or else people would go there instead of Galveston.
yeah...i mean Galveston is Galveston. it's still a beach to me, though. still fun, even if it isn't a tropical dream. i just love the coastline in general. totally with you on the history...i love that crap.
We spent the weekend at my Brother in Law's new beach house near Jamaica Beach and the beach was as nice as I've seen it in a couple years. Now it wasn't anything like our vacation to Cozumel but it was clean and close. The strand is always good. We'll have the family all decked out for Dickens this weekend. Where is this Benno's place? We go to galveston all the time and i've never been.
My family from Cali was just looking for something to do, and I knew they liked the beach. We've been to the museums a bazillion times, and the NFL, NBA games are just too expensive (we went to the Aeros game last night, though). Restaurants are fine, but not an all-day activity. -- droxford
East beach...on the seawall. it's a bit of a dive. almost looks like a fast food place...counter-service. but it's spicy seafood. more cajun style..but with fresh from the Gulf stuff.
I like Rockport. I've never been to the beaches there but I've fished there and the water is beautiful! The beach there is Texas' only Blue Wave Beach (by the National Clean Beaches Council) http://www.rockport-fulton.org/
Curious that you mention this - my grandmother was from Rockport, yet I have never been there. -- droxford
