First week of camp Rudy Ball was going through drastic changes! No more isolations... more defense... motion OOOOOOPS - - I mean "5 man" offense. I was pumped up, "this may be fun to watch" I thought to myself. Even though I do not think he is the best coach, I gave him the benefit of the doubt and took the approach that 80% of people in here take "In Rudy We Trust." Big mistake! When watching the games, I see less and less of the "5 man" and more and more iso. If this does not change this team WILL NOT reach its potential. 1. An offense which involves reads, motion, & passing to the open man for a high percentage shot. 2. The offense the team opens games with then transitions to Rudy Ball of old. 3. It means there are 5 men on the floor while on offense. 4. A crafty new name for the same ISO that was played last year.
The Spurs took the 5 man away and offered up ISO's for free... They had to do simple stuff with Yao Ming, he didn't know the offense well enough yet. Hopefully, with a little time, we'll see more of the 5 man. It's still early. We were all complaining about Yao Ming not getting a release only days ago!
I think we are going to see a lot more post play with back side cuts and movement away from the ball than we have the past few years since we lost all our post presence. We are still going to ISO as situations dictate since our guards excell at going around defenders. Now if they can grasp the concept of drawing the double team and hitting the open man with a timely pass it will all work out.
Have not been the least bit impressed and do not understand why we have not seen more movement. If anyone thinks the regular season will result in the offense being used more, they are sadly mistaken. Now is the time to work out the kinks not to do more of the stuff that gave them less than 30 wins.
