He will likely win his 2nd MVP right here, but where does he stand amongst the holy trinity of modern era point guards (Magic, Stockton, Isiah)? He doesn't have the body of work thus far as he kind of burst onto the scene in terms of "greatness" last year. He was awful early in his career with Dallas, become All-Star quality later on, and became "great" just last year. You also have to take into account the fact that there hasn't been any "legends on great teams" the past two years. No Micheal with the Bulls, no 29ppg Shaq with his teams, no Duncan or Hakeem. The only real legend having a great statistical year is Kobe and his team isn't very good. However, MVP's are MVP's and you can't overlook Nash's accomplishments this year keeping that team at the top without Stoudemire. I obviously have him behind Isiah and Magic and I just can't put him ahead of Stockton due to the body of work John accumulated.
think the jury is out till he can win a title, certainly amazing moving the ball, sharing it and has that make his team mates better factor, but really to be among the greats he needs titles...
He would be right up there with the elites such as Magic and Isiah if he wins it all this year.. or in a few years while he is still the main engine behind the team. Otherwise, he would just be like other talent pg in the past such as Kevin JOhnson... mark price...etc.
i think nash deserves the mvp more this year then last but i don't see him getting back-to-back awards. for a guy who only really only plays on one side of the ball it wouldn't really sit well with me either. nash has only played at a hall of fame level for two seasons while magic, isiah, and stockton maintained that level over nearly their entire careers. if nash wins a ring i'll put him up there with stockton but for now is his career as a whole any better then say kevin johnson?
Stockton never won a title either. But he is always mentioned among the greatest PGs. I think he is clearly the best PG in the league right now. But if he doesn't produce more MVP level seasons after this, I would say his legacy is behind Jason Kidd.
I agree. Right now, Nash is still behind Kidd and Stockton when you look at their entire careers. But the last two years, Nash has been better than either one of them at their peak. But he needs 2-3 more stellar years after this season to be in their career echelon.
He hasn't done it for nearly long enough to be considered a great player. I have never seen a player 'explode' this late in his career, I think that when all is set and done his career won't stack up against the likes of Stockton, Magic, Isiah, Big O, etc...unless he leads that team to a championship.
In History? His legacy will be overshadowed by the current national and international happenings. I see maybe 1-2 books written with Nash as the focal point. There will be at least twice that many written on US Foreign Policy decisions during the last 6 years. If you're talking about just basketball history, I think he makes the Hall and is considered one of the second tier point guards, behind Cousy, Magic, Stockton.
Remember when there was a time, we wouldn't think of trading francis for him?...at least some of us... like me...
One thing about Nash -- i'm not sure i've ever witnessed anyone erupt from good to elite so quickly. Did anyone see him becoming the freaking MVP after the trade from Dallas? That still is amazing to me.
There will be 4 books written on neoconservative foreign policy? You might want to add a few zeros at the end of that 4...
Payton was much better and more dominating than Nash at his prime. If Shawn Kemp had retired early before he started eating contests with his pregnant babies' mothers, then he'd have just as many years as Steve in his prime (~6) with stats to prove it. If he doesn't win it, you can't place him above Payton, Iverson, or even KJ because those players have had more consistently longer careers.
