Need some help and info from yall My sister is currently working as a Nanny in London, and a family in Phili is very interested in getting her to work for them. So just trying to find out as much as i can about Phili for her, I've only passed thru on the train, so i don't know much besides their passion for their sporting teams and it being the home of Cut Tino. So help me out guys, what kind of place is it????
i live in the suburbs of philly. philly has some nice parts. a lot of my friends live in northeast philly, which is pretty nice.
Hey Smeg: I used to live in Philly -- two years -- and I liked it alot. It is a little rough; there is no glamour element, it is more of a functional place, where people go to work and complain and live thier lives. Its not San Francisco, in that way. Crime is a problem -- for the most part, you wont get hurt -- as long as you stay out of way North Philly and Way West Philly -- but cars get broken into alot (broken window shards on concrete are called Philadelphia Diamonds...) Race issues can be pretty rough. But there is cool cultural stuff, good food, lots of places to go and look at, proximity to cool places, and Red Plum Water Ice during the summer, which is the best. It is a little gruff, but I really liked it there. Some of the nices people I ever met, some of the meanest people I ever met. Where would she be living? Center City? CBFC
your sister must be a hell of a nanny. From Australia gets relocated to a family in London and now a family in Philly wants her. I didn't know nannies were so mobile.
Philly is great. lots of historical places. i grew up in center city in the ritenhouse square section, which i think is the best part of the city. i live in cali rite now cause of school, but plan on moving back if can get into the graduate program at UPenn.
[Julian and the Delivery Guy are learning how to read] Julian: Electricity! Constitution! Philadelphia! Nazo: Fish! Pony! Hip, Hip Hop, Hip Hop anonymous? Damn you! You gave him the easy ones. I just love that part of the movie. All I know about Philly is my US IT headquarters is there now, so I'll be visiting it sometime....
I've lived in Philly (Rittenhouse Square) for two years, and I really like it. Like CBFC said, there is a lot of cultural stuff to do here. Great thing about Philly is that, compared to other East Coast cities, it's damn livable. You can see a play here for $30 if you want -- that wouldn't be possible in New York unless the playhouse was in Hoboken. Also, you can live in an apt that's bigger than a walk-in closet. Lots of great restaurants and cool bars, too. Great college basketball scene. You can get to New York or DC (I go to DC for day trips for work all the time) in under two hours. Great location for traveling the East Coast. Also, like CBFC said, it's definitely got a working class feel to it. Can be rough around the edges, but in a good way. Yes, there are some very bad neighborhoods with a lot of crime, but as long as you know where not to go, you're cool. Thing is, it changes from block to block, so she would probably want hang out with people who know her way around when she comes to town. As for Bryn Mawr, it's a perfectly nice suburb near a university. She can get in and out of Philly easily with a car or without one (I think -- not positive about the rail line). Oh, and just so you know -- my wife and I were real good friends with an Aussie couple that loved it here. They had to move back to Sydney for a job, though, but it's good to know that this place agrees with Aussies. Angus sure missed his cricket, though.
I have really enjoyed Philly in my travels. a few points of information: womans world cup will be playing in Philly later this year ManU and FC Barcalona will be there real soon, like this month south Street is awsome, and there are plenty of bars because i know Australians and their bars. as far as nannies go, Yes they are very mobile, but they are usually called opairs(sp) here in the hamptons everyone has a nanny/opare opare is a french nanny service by the way, but it usually applies to any foreign nanny, or an expensive one they usually party hard as ahell and hang in groups becuase they have to bring the kids to soccer, tennis, balet... and they all meet at those places and tend to hang together. especially the irish ones anyways ranking my favorite cities in this country by atmosphere alone I put Boston at #1 Philly at #2 there are plenty of smaller cities i like more, but as far as the big boys, Philly is pretty sweet
The two most important things to know about Philly are the intersection of 9th and Passyunk and Termini Brothers Bakery. I love visiting Philly (cuz, more often than not, me being there means the 'Stros are whoring the locals), but I, honestly, wouldn't want to live there.
I heard that their nickname, The City of Brotherly Love, doesn't mean squat there because they have some of the rudest citizens in the USA. Now I have never been there so I won't comment that is just what I have heard about it. I still love the Eagles!!!
Wrath of Khan: "Thing is, it changes from block to block, so she would probably want hang out with people who know her way around when she comes to town." God, tell me about it. Amazing, two blocks is like light years in terms on neighborhoods -- there are all these invisible lines that people respect - it is amazing. And I understand that light years measures speed, not distances, but I am too lazy to find an appropriate metaphor. Wait, that's wrong -- crap, I just confused myself. Does the above metaphor -- scratch, similie -- does that work? Anyway...Bryn Mawr is fine -- it's a fine suburb, I think right off the "Main Line," which is basically a name for the road that some white people take to get further from people of color. Just don't let her get fooled into going to the Jersey Shore for vacation -- it's cool only in a Bruce Springsteen Song way, not in a "this is enjoyable" type of way.
