I’d be careful. He hasn’t affected winning anywhere he’s been

There’s only 3-4 guys who truly affect winning regardless of roster/team goals

The way that the current CBA is constructed, teams can comfortably have 2 players on max contracts each. That's 60 guys. Lauri is 100% getting that <10year vet max. Any Allstar is easily worth 30% of the cap.

He is better than Murray, Franz Wagner and Mitchell who got the max.

Don’t want Lauri. For one he has a girl’s name. But forreal… the guy is not a good defender, and a mediocre rebounder. Plus i think Bari has more upside… pass

He's a no-brainer max player in today's league. If OG Anunoby is damn near getting paid max dollars then Lauri is obviously worth max money. He might not be a true superstar or even a top 10 player, but so what? That's what the market will bear, so that's what he's going to get paid.

I do think he's good enough to be the #2 offensive option on a contender by the way, depending on the roster around him. And you can have two max players in the current CBA... just not three (for very long).

I agree with this assessment but I don’t think he is a good fit on the rockets due to his defensive deficiencies.

Yeah, perhaps not. He would fit well on offense but then both our starting frontcourt players would be average-at-best defensively. Hard to build a good defense that way.

    https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/56...en-brandon-ingram-trade-rumors-nba-offseason/

The first, most important domino is Lauri Markkanen in Utah. Even if much of the league thinks the Jazz are on a fishing expedition right now and won’t really trade him unless they get a Gobertian return, it has the benefit of a clear expiration date: Aug. 6.

That is both the first date the Jazz can sign him to an extension, with a salary bump built in using their cap space, and the last date they can sign him and still have him trade-eligible on the date of the Feb. 6 trade deadline. The Jazz need to know exactly what they’re doing with Markkanen when they wake up that morning.

Markkanen makes a pittance for a player of his caliber — just $18.4 million — but will be an unrestricted free agent at season’s end. He can make much, much more next summer — likely a four-year max worth $200 million if he changes teams or up to five years and $270 million if he doesn’t.

The unique carrot Utah can offer, using its trove of cap space, is a bag of at least $15 million but no more than $24 million attached to his 2024-25 salary, followed by a four-year, $209 million extension Markkanen can lock in risk-free right now. With a 27-year-old star signed for half a decade, Markkanen theoretically becomes a more valuable trade chip for the Jazz come February.

Or maybe not. Fitting in Markkanen’s current $18 million salary in July is a much easier pull than absorbing a cap number somewhere between $33 million and $42 million midstream in February. The universe of potential acquirers may never be greater than it is now. Markkanen has some agency here too, as he can nod in the direction of franchises where he’d be willing to re-sign.

So … there are a lot of moving parts here, and it may hold up the rest of the league’s business for a bit.

(Side bar: My two favorite fake trades.)

First: Philadelphia acquires Markkanen by sign-and-trading Kenyon Martin Jr. on a three-year max deal, with only the first year guaranteed, and adding Ricky Council IV and four firsts (one unprotected from the LA Clippers in 2028, one in 2026 that is likely Oklahoma City’s, their own unprotected in 2029 or first year available and their own unprotected in 2031 if available); that keeps the Sixers just under the second apron, and they can do this wacky contract because Martin has full Bird rights and hasn’t signed yet.

And that’s fine but Utah would be running in place. Which is cool with me.

And If he’s traded it will be his fourth team and he’s what 27? So he’s bounced around quite a bit.

Franchise pillars don’t normally do that so early in their careers.

You dont need to be a franchise pillar to get the max. Utah will extend him cuz he provides a lot of value and worst case can be flipped later on like Gobert/Mitchell.

27 is when players hit their prime so I'm sure Utah wont have a lack of suitors.

IIRC if he signs an extension with Utah, he literally cannot be traded until the actual trade deadline... :eyes emoji:

I just heard about this from yutube. what an odd situation for a player to be able to get traded only during the deadline. how does this make sense?
