For the purpose of this discussion. Here is an article in the Dallas paper today about the upcoming Dallas Trade. I thought it was interesting that Dallas might not be done dealing, and might deal away Chris Mills' expiring contract....

#####

Mavericks might not be done dealing yet
Eight-player swap with Warriors could end up a three-way trade
01:32 AM CDT on Monday, August 18, 2003
By CHUCK CARLTON / The Dallas Morning News
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcon...l/mavs/stories/081803dnspomavslede.a7389.html

On Friday, the Mavericks agreed to an eight-player trade with the Golden State Warriors that brought high-scoring Antawn Jamison to Dallas.

On Monday, the trade should finally become official. The NBA is expected to give its approval following an early-afternoon conference call.

But the Mavericks might have more to announce Monday.

Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks' president of basketball operations, said his cell phone "exploded" on Saturday about the time news leaked about the impending deal.

"We're getting a lot of calls from teams that are interested in doing business," Nelson said, estimating that he's spoken to as many as 20 teams this weekend.

The Mavericks are scheduled to acquire Jamison, Danny Forston, Jiri Welsch and Chris Mills from Golden State for Nick Van Exel, Avery Johnson, Evan Eschmeyer and Popeye Jones. Team officials can't comment about the trade until it's completed.

Each of the incoming players is attractive, to the Mavericks and other teams, although Mills is the most likely candidate to be on the move, again. He has one year remaining at $6 million in his contract, a cap-friendly number for teams planning a year ahead.

He could be a bargaining chip that might be flipped for players who could provide inside help, although the top big men are long gone from the board. The eight-player deal also erased any possibility of the Mavericks signing free-agent center Vladimir Stepania.

Timing is important, too. If the Mavericks don't deal one of the new additions Monday, packaging it as a three-team deal, they must wait two months to package any of the four with a player off their current roster in a deal.

Fortson, after playing only 17 games last season, might have value to other teams as well. He averaged a double-double (points and rebounds) in 2001-02 before losing his power forward spot to rookie Troy Murphy last season.

The Mavericks would probably be far less likely to entertain offers for Jamison, a career 20.2 point a game scorer and only 27. Jamison was the focus of the trade from the Mavericks' perspective. At 6-9, he's capable of hitting the 20-foot jumper or scoring inside with a variety of moves.

He strengthens the small forward spot and allows Michael Finley to play shooting guard, filling a hole that's been a concern almost as nagging as the lack of an inside presence.

Welsch is only 23 and a former first-round draft pick. At 6-7, he can play as many as three positions and could even be a point forward in coach Don Nelson's offense.

#####

If Chris Mills' 6 million a year expiring contract is causing teams to want him (and he is a cancer mind you) and if Terrell Brandon's expiring contract this year netted the Wolves Sprewell, then what would Glen Rice's 9 MILLION DOLLAR expiring contract be worth to teams? This HAS to be a good bargining chip for us!

I think its worth hanging on to, to free up our own cap space next year and sign an MCE player (at a position of need to be determined later).

For a team like the Blazers or Knicks, Rice is worth a lot. I think there are plenty of trades we could do.

One I would like to see is the Rockets trading for a backup PG. I would like to see if we could trade for Jeff McInnis. He already plays backup for the Blazers, and has done a great job. I think both teams would have to add a little something something, but I think its a start.

I've read here that the Rockets need Rice's expiring contract to afford Francis' raise next year? Is this true or not?

If we had any leadership at all on this team we could have gotten Jamison......

Francis's raise has already kicked in.

btw: I'd like to trade Rice, too, but his expiring contract is just as valuable to keep for us as it is for other teams to want.

note that unless we make a Rice trade with team under the cap, or a team with a big trade exception, then we are going to have to take a bunch of salary back. I don't see a team using cap space on Rice, because why would they really need his expiring contract? So, that leaves teams with trade exceptions or us taking contracts back that the sending team is trying to purge (how good are those players??).

You have to measure the value of keeping Rice and his expiring contract versus getting equal contracts back.

Why not just keep Rice and resign him to the vet minimum.

Another thing to consider is why are we assuming Rice won't be a Rocket after the contract expires? Dude already has a ring, and he might just like staying with Yao Ming at low veteran $s.

I for one wouldn't mind resigning Rice at the vet minimum, or so, until he retires. He could be just as valuable to us as Eddie Johnson was. We had Eddie from age 37-40. Rice is 36, right?

Eddie was in MUCH better shape then Rice is.......

Rice is washed up, but his leadership is one thing that may be needed....although on the team he won the ring, he was hardly a leader.

and money.

Can't everybody see? It is so OBVIOUS that Rox does not want to pay luxury tax at least for the time being. That's why Rox did not even match Posey's salary. If Rox is a contender, then the situation will be different.

Well, maybe it is not that obvious for those fans who have no dollar sense.

yeah, it must have been that 1yr stint in Greece, then getting waived by Denver midseason in 1997 that inspired him to get in MUCH better shape than Rice.

Maybe Rice should spend a yr in Europe like Eddie did.

Rice isn't washed up, if you mean he should retire. Rice's legitimate starting days are over, but guys who play 62 games and shoot 40% from the 3pt line are not washed up....anymore than Steve Kerr was when he was logging 60 games before San Antonio piccked him up at age 37.

Do you believe he isn't worth the vet minimum, or did you just want to write in ALL-CAPS?

There's a problem equating Chris Mills and Glen Rice in a trade. Mills was a throw-in...Rice (at half again the salary) would have to be the centerpiece.

IMO, there's no way GSW gives up Jamison (and matching change) for Rice and change. If you want a Jamison type player in Houston, be prepared to give up at least Mobley and a 1st in addition to Rice. Is this lineup really any better than what we already have?

1) SF / MN
2) Pike / AGriffin / Hawkins
3) Jamison / AGriffin / Nachbar
4) MT/EG
5) YM/KC

Plus there's the chemistry thing and Jamison is on the books until 2007. And GSW already has JRich, Troy Murphy, Dampier and Foyle. Not a good trade partner.

IMHO, Rice will go to the EC at the Feb. trade deadline for a decent SF (Posey+) and a player with a moderately bad contract.

HP,

No, I agree he is worth the vet minimum, but I think his expiring contract is worth more in trade.

Didn't Eddie wait until late in his career to become a workout freak? That seems to happen with several players that want to extend their careers. Could be an example for Rice. He could probably stand to be a little trimmer build. Less weight would make it easier on his knees, too.

hey, that was a 4 team trade. It was not Brandon for Sprewell.
It is more accurately Van Horn for Sprewell, and Minn also gave up Marc Jackson.

That trade never works as you described. New York wasn't trading Sprewell for Brandon. Four teams had to be involved as it was, and word was that the Rockets tried to get in that trade, anyhow. Just a very complicated trade all around....where Minn was big winner and NY and Philly swapped for equally bad contracts.....and Atlanta seems to have just wanted to drop Robinson.

What? Would you like to have traded Rice and MoT for Glenn Robinson? Let's not call that a Rice for Sprewell opportunity. It wasn't.

That's not the correct comparison though. It isn't: trade Rice vs resigning him at the vet min.

What is the value for another team getting Rice's expiring contract? Is it purely to let it expire and not spend any of the resulting savings? In our case, we could let it expire and then use the resulting savings.

Thus, the comparison is:

Trading Rice vs keeping Rice at vet min and sign a $5m FA next summer.

remember: Portland let Sabonis expire...so, we, likewise, could receive as much value keeping Rice as trading him.

HP,

But my understanding is that we are already over the cap and will not be able to benefit from Rice's expiring contract due to other contracts kicking in...therefore, we should trade him for someone of greater value.

Hold on, when I brought up Sprewell for Brandon I obviously knew it was not one player for the other, but that was the "end result." The thread is what is Rice's WORTH. And for the Wolves they were able to parlay Brandon for Sprewell. Where did I say the Wolves traded Brandon for Sprewell? I said the Wolves "netted" Sprewell for Brandon. In other words Sprewell was the END RESULT. That is what I was saying. 4 teams, 8 teams whatever. That was the end result.

I never ONCE said that Sprewell for Rice was an "opportunity". Where did you reference that? Please show me where I said that? Did I say it was even offered to us? No. And no, I would not want Rice and MoT for Glenn Robinson. I would not even take Glenn Robinson for Rice alone.
Not sure where the heck you are going with all of this. Please RE-READ my initial post.

From a basketball point of view, that makes good sense. But, with the luxury tax, you just can't expect the Rockets to spend at that level. Considering their obvious reluctance to pay the luxury tax, letting Rice's contract expire to reduce payroll is the best path. Otherwise, we may lose existing valuable talent to free agency because we can't afford to keep them.
