So I've been drinking a ton lately...My parents seem to think I'm an alcoholic..But my defense is..when it comes to school/jobs..I know my limits. I wouldn't drink on the job or to class. To me, an alcoholic is someone who can't control it by any means, someone who drinks first thing in the morning...Someone who has to drink at work, etc.. I'm also a college student btw, which can be an excuse for heavy drinking but still...If alcohol got banned or something, I'd still obtain it by any means (within reason)..I mean I wouldn't rob a bank for it, but I'd pay someone $100+ just to get me alcohol

In your opinion, what makes a person an alcoholic?

When it starts having severe adverse consequences on your personal or professional life. If you are screwing up your relationships and your job for alcohol, and you won't stop, then you've got a problem.

If it's not affecting your grades and social life, I wouldn't worry about it TOO much, just don't let it get to that point.

When the perceiver perceives it as having a negative effect on the perceived's life. The perceiver and the perceived can be the same person, or not.

I completely agree with this 100%. I drink alot but I don't let it affect my grades and social life. I'll get drunk 3-5x a week but I'll still go to my classes, etc. When I worked full time in the summer, I'd only get drunk on Friday/Saturday nights

This does sound worrying. Can you enjoy alcohol without getting drunk?

I enjoy beer I guess, but at the same time, a few beers lead to 5 beers which leads to 10, etc. As for anything else, I would only drink to get drunk..For example, I wouldn't drink a mixed drunk unless I was planning on getting drunk

My definition is very simple - and I know a few alcoholics. :(

If you are addicted to it or require it to function, you are an alcoholic. Based on the above, it sounds like you are an alcoholic - but what does that even mean? Don't worry about the label so much - just make a value-based decision on the following:

How much does my use of alcohol cost me? What could it potentially cost me? Is it worth it?

You're a college student - so it's possible that you are getting drunk without drunk driving. Maybe your biggest possible risk is getting a girl pregnant while drunk. That only carries a possible sentence of 20 years of severe financial penalties - but heck, that could happen while you are sober, right?

Only you can decide how big a problem it is for you and what you need to do about it - don't let a label and society do it for you.

Btw, you may want to ask yourself why you need to drink. If it's for social reasons, I don't think it's a big deal - you can always change the people you are around. Some people drink to self-medicate though - and that's a whole different can of worms.

Don't drink alcohol for a week, and see how you feel. If you find that to be an incredibly difficult task, then I'd say you're addicted to it.

    You have a drinking problem.

Of course, most of us do when we are in college.

Getting drunk, just to be drunk, especially multiple times a week is a very stupid thing to do. I turned 21, and all of a sudden I quit drinking for the most part. I have beer in my fridge that has been there for months. When I do drink, I usually drink too much.

I drink too much. But I rarely get drunk. I am not an alcoholic, I just enjoy good booze.

this right here. I used to drink a lot and everyone wanted to call me an alcoholic. It was never affecting my work or anything else. I stopped for 8 months without a problem and without even wanting to drink during that period. If you can do without, then you're not an alcoholic.

If you can function without a drink, you are probably fine. If you can't, you may have a problem.

I'm a social drinker. If I'm in a social situation where everyone is drinking, of course I'm going to drink and have a good time. But if I'm in one where no one else is drinking, I'm fine with it and don't even need to. I just go with the flow.

I'm fine with drinking, but getting drunk is essentially poisoning yourself. Doing it that often can kill you. 3-5 times a week? Really?

    That's worrisome.

    good question.

op, no one can tell you that you're an alcoholic (parents included). if you find yourself over-analyzing, justifying, rationalizing, and manipulating your environment and self- you may want to get that checked out. :)

I'm no expert, but its that reliance on alcohol that makes one an alcoholic.

    Medical criteria for alcoholism:

    1. Have you ever felt you needed to Cut down on your drinking?
    2. Have people Annoyed you by criticizing your drinking?
    3. Have you ever felt Guilty about drinking?
    4. Have you ever felt you needed a drink first thing in the morning (Eye-opener) to steady your nerves or to get rid of a hangover?

Answer positive for 2 or more and you're considered an alcoholic.

Alcoholism is physical dependence or, in other words, real addiction. Can you honestly say that there is any scenario that you would cause you to quit right now and never drink again? If so, then you aren't an alcoholic.

But, you can have a drinking problem and not be an alcoholic. I think you may have a drinking problem.

Do you want to stop or cut back?

    This...

Your current rate of consumption will lead to physical/chemical dependence and then you will be an alcoholic subject to severe withdrawal when you try to stop.
