My woke take: America has always been a **** place if you were an out-group and who is in and who is out has fluctuated over time. Right now we are seeing a movement where the unemployable (eg these ICE bastards) are rising up to punish the employed (educated middle class) and the immigrant working class who replaced them for lower wages.

We have a fairly vocal, and growing number of people attempting to change what it means to be an American. They call themselves “nativists” but they believe that a Mayflower Family is more American than someone that is second or third generation and first and second generation really aren’t Americans. They believe that an Indian or Pakistani American isn’t American, regardless if they are a citizen or were even born in America- that they should be put in a pecking order behind a white family that is “American.” Tied into this is the idea that the USA is a Christian nation by culture and operation, and Christianity should take precedence above all else. So - at this point there isn’t even an agreement on what is America or Americans. These same people want an authoritarian ruler that has say over all other branches. These beliefs are not new - they just were unpopular from the 1940’s through about a decade ago. People that lived through and survived fascism and communism as well said that they wouldn’t again. Well those people are all dead- and here we are. These same values and virtues and claims for authoritarianism and (soon calls for socialism) are back. Immigration and overt racism - and the rewriting of history and gas lighting. I actually have seen an increase in young “historians” and young people defending Nazi Germany and Adolf Hitler. A call to return to “olden times” (that largely never existed).
