I swear to god, I've called AT&T out 80 ****ing times and this isn't fixed.

1st time: I usually get around 4.9 mbps, so this guy comes out before the hurricane and re-splices some wires and afterwards I get around 1.4 mbps to every site that I download from.

I figure, hell it's the Friday before the hurricane comes, no biggie at least I have internet even if it's slow. I'll just call them after the hurricane comes through.

2nd time: This guy comes and re-splices the line again, this guy LOOKS like he really knows what he's doing as opposed to the first guy. When he's here, everythings great. I'm getting my 4.9 mbps from all of the speakeasy.net test sites, yada yada yada.

When he leaves, I try just some regular downloads for the hell of it. I get like 1.2-2.3 mbps from each site. Mandriva.org, usually my good test site and filehippo.com, another good test site.

We've called them out before and this is so god damn frustrating. I only listed twice, but it's more than that it's just AT&T's general incompetence.

The part that infuriates me the most is that this guy's bragging the whole time about how he really knows what he's doing, this is his specialty etc. I'm like yeah yeah, no one ****ing cares, fix my DSL and get it back to normal speeds.

I can't fathom for the life of me, why all of these speedtest sites are giving me my normal speed of about 4.9 mbps, but any regular American site I download from gives me like a 1/4th of that. How in the world is that possible?

Equally frustrating is I'm not sure if this bull**** is hurricane related now or not. I just want to pin all of the blame on AT&T, no excuses.

What is your actual dsl connection speed?

If you are connecting at a lower speed. It's a speed cap set by AT&T.

If you have a speedstream 4100 like me, you can go to 192.168.0.1 to check the connection speed.

If you have a 2wire like others, I think it's 192.168.1.254. To know for sure, check for a yellow sticker on it.

If it's a speed cap, you will have to a one hour song and dance with AT&T India, before they send it to ASI to raise the cap. I had to go through this torture twice.

You can avoid the song and dance and go to www.dslreports.com and make a post in the at&t direct forum and one of those fantastic ASI guys can bump you up. Be sure to read the rules or faq, so that your post has all the neccesary information.

The "elite" DSL package. Actually, what's funny is as I type this all of the hard-wired comps are getting 4.9 mbps from everywhere. Yet, my wireless speeds are the ones that are actually blowing balls. This doesn't make much sense because both the hard-wired comps and the wireless laptops were getting 4.9 mbps before all of these problems, but I guess I don't really care as long as the comps that run with ethernet cables to the router are ok. Hmm.

If you're getting good speeds off your hard wired PCs...then you're b****ing to the wrong people. Unless it's an ATT Wireless Modem/Router combo. Even still, wireless will always be a step slower, if not 2-100 steps slower. Change your wireless channel (1-11, normally 1, 6, 11 are used, since they don't overlap each other, everything else has some sort of overlap with the next...but anyway)

Check to see what other "hot spots" are in the area, and what wireless channel they're using. Find the one that's used least (again, 1, 6, 11) and change your router to that.

    If you need further help...

That actually worked, thanks Miguel :). I'd had it on 11 before and that worked well but apparently it doesn't anymore, so 1 it is.

If you're getting 4.9 at the wall, then you need to check everything after that.

I've got AT&T DSL in Dallas and I'm getting 5.1 mbps. It's always been reliable for me, but location (among other things) matters.

You better get on Comcast about giving you 2 credits, one for tv and one for internet. no service, no money. At least with electricity, it's metered so you don't get charged.

    I better be getting three.

two high speed internet lines, one tv.

damn good thing this didn't happen during the season, my business line is the one that hosts the tracker.

I gave them a week leeway, I tried to be understanding, but one of the things about having business class cable is the "supposed" priority service. Someone in the business support office isnt gonna like me come Monday, my exchange server cant receive its mail if the damn line isnt active.

Thats what I get for insisting on hosting my own exchange server, I should have set it up to retrieve from a hosting provider instead, at least then our company email would have somewhere to go during this outage instead of being bounced back. My mistake, one I dont intend on repeating.
