What if Houston had just offered Lowry 4-years, $18M to start?

Do you think he would have taken it, and not put us in this place. I think he would have. 4.5 million a year for 4 years.

While the restricted free agency route is generally good asset management, as a friend of mine said, it is not good people management.

We shall see how this all plays out, but maybe Lowry doesn't WANT to come back....

He'd have been an absolute fool to take that. Steve Blake is a clearly lesser player to Lowry, and he got $16 mil over four years. The difference between Blake and Lowry is more than 500K per season.

Morey took a risk, obviously it didn't pay off this time. When he did it with Landry, he got a huge steal. Unfortunately, he didn't foresee other GM's throwing huge money at scrubs which caused Lowry's value to jump.

i doubt that was his plan, because that plan is pretty stupid considering we all knew that a bunch of teams were going to clear cap space, not get the FAs they wanted, and have to overpay next-tier guys with that money.

i think he didn't sign Lowry/Scola because he wanted to use them as trade pieces, and it didn't work out. so now he's stuck.

How in the world do you know what Morey anticipated Lowry's value as? This seems perfectly reasonable to me.

A lot players are not all about money.
They might want to play for a team that want him with lower pay.

The caravan should have been to Lowry's house.

It is part of the process. The Rox were much harder on Landry when he was a RFA, and he came back no problem. At the end of the day Lowry wanted a big pay raise and he is gonna get it. I think the bigger issue will be him wanting to start.

Exactly, the whole point of a restricted FA is to let the market dictate his value low balling him would not have created a different result. Morey's problem now is that it is obvious that Cleveland is overpaying. Do we overpay for a guy who we know will be successful in our system or can we probably find adequate production from another player at a fraction of the cost?

That's the only question left to answer.

Yeah, I don't know if he'd be as happy with the money that way. If he didn't test the market, he'd wonder if he left money on the table. By getting the contract from someone else, he knows he got market value and can be satisfied with his contract.

As for the RFA business alienating players, I think people make too much of it. The RFAs know the situation. They probably get frustrated when it drags out all offseason or if they're forced to sign the tender offer. But, I think they can find satisfaction in getting finding their value on the market, even if their home team matches. And, I don't think Lowry meant anything too antagonistic about wanting to start. All players want to start. And, I think he needed to say something to let other teams know he saw value in leaving the Rockets so they'd offer him something.

Morey is an opportunist, and this is what an opportunist usually gets.
