I don't believe in this conspiracy theory but am just wondering about it. One of the central tenets of the conspiracy about alien visitors to Earth is that the government doesn't want to reveal that information since it would cause a widespread panic. I have always wondered if this really would be the case given the prevalance of science fiction and the persistence of belief in alien visitations. Do y'all think if the government came out today and said that an alien spacecraft really did crash in Roswell, NM in 1947 and that the government has the wreckage and bodies what would happen?
I doubt it would cause much panic.....people are a resilient bunch....it might screw up some religious beliefs, but other than that....not much would change. I think there is life out there, is it here....there is strong evidence that it is here.....at least in credible sightings etc...even Nasa astronauts have said they see the Alien craft etc... And assuming they are here......yes the government would know. DD
Strong evidence? I doubt it. And if the government (I assume you mean the US government) knew about it, wouldn't every government on earth also know, or do aliens only visit the States?
If the US Government knew I would figure that all of the major industrial powers know. Although if the only evidence was the Roswell crash then its possible only the US knew. If Russia, PRC, Britain, and France knew also though the same question would apply since as the conspiracy goes they are keeping the secret of aliens from their public to prevent a widespread panic.
I have a graduate degree in US History and work for the government. I'd be shocked if a story that big could be kept secret for so long. It would be the first time.
I agree which is why I doubt the conspiracy but am just wondering about what would be the public reaction and not so much how a government would keep a secret like that.
I think the perception would be, if the U.S. government (and possibly all world governments) could keep a secret that big for that long, what other secrets are being kept.
If they did it in 1950 . . panic . . . in the 80 still possible You have to understand. . . through media and literature over the last 50 yrs we have been PREPARED for that eventuality . . . . It would just get wrapped into the normal spin cycle. Can you imagine the Dem/Repub responses trying to simply wrap one of the most important days in the history of humans into the week's political message? "How many aliens are there? We won't know until Obama's health plan goes into effect, offering healthcare to an entire planet's worth of extraterrestrials who need strange, expensive procedures that your tax dollars will pay for. On Vega-11, some arachnid like creature will be having his fifth arm replaced, while on Earth you'll be told by the socialist government that you can no longer have Viagra."
I just can't see how aliens could make it here. This would mean that either: a) Einstein's theory of special relativity is actually flawed - you can travel faster than the speed of light b) Aliens can't travel faster than c, but figured out a shortcut in the space-time continuum via wormholes or something of that nature c) Aliens have an insanely long life span

We are talking about aliens so any and all could apply. FYI the theory of warping space doesn't conflict with relativity since you never actually travel faster than the speed of light. The problem is figuring out how you could generate enough energy to warp space.
