Anybody know what happened to the dj's on 94.5 The Buzz? I usually flip it over there when there is a commercial on 610. I've noticed the morning and afternoon guys havent been on the air for a few days now. When I go to the stations website, they have taken down all of the info about their dj's. Did they all get fired or what?
I've noticed commercials about a 'new' Buzz, but I don't listen to the radio regularly enough to pay much attention to the djs.
ALL of them were unexpectedly fired on December 1. This is from newsradiostar.com... (December 1, 2003 12:37pm) Clear Channel's KTBZ in Houston fired five on air personel this morning and are now promoting "building a better buzz." The entire morning show was fired including hosts Jeff McMurray and Steve Robinson. Also fired were Rex Oates, Lisa Kendall and Eric Schmidt. PD Vince Richards said the station would be jockless until replacements are found. He told the Star he had no one in place as yet. He said the format would remain alternative. Jeff has been at KTBZ for almost five years and said the firing was a complete surprise._ The 25 year PD/morning radio veteran said he planned to stay in radio and was looking at other opportunities in the market as well.
From the Chron: KTBZ, KODA lose veteran DJs By CLIFFORD PUGH Copyright 2003 Houston Chronicle A wave of changes in on-air personalities has hit two Houston radio stations. KTBZ-FM (94.5), known as The Buzz, dismissed its morning drive team -- Jeff McMurray, Steve Robison and Rex Oates -- on Monday. The station also fired midday DJ Lisa Kendall and afternoon drive-time DJ Eric Schmidt. Vince Richards, director of rock programming for three Clear Channel stations in Houston, including KTBZ, said the dismissals came about because the station was "underperforming." It ranked 10th in the most recent Arbitron ratings. The Morning Buzz show ranked 14th, down from eighth place a year ago. Nighttime DJ Pam Kelly has moved to mornings until a new team is hired in the next two to three months, Richards said. The station will continue to play alternative rock. Veteran DJ Weaver Morrow has left KODA-FM (99.1), where he co-hosted the morning show with Dana Tyson for more than a decade. Tyson remains on the program, which ranked fourth in the most recent Arbitron ratings. Ken Charles, Clear Channel regional vice president of programming, described the move as amicable. "It was just one of those things where we decided to make a change in the morning show," Charles said. "We parted as friends and wish Weaver well." The station is looking for a new co-host, but no dramatic changes are planned, Charles said. The adult contemporary format will remain the same at the station, known as Sunny 99.1. And, Charles said, despite some time off, home handyman Tom Tynan is still at the station.
egh... I found most radio stations to be the best during this "transition time" cause they just play music all the time.. and fewer commercials.. but if clear channel owns it expect more boring and anoyying silly djs... and just national broadcast of the same music and nothing with local/regional taste... notice how now you can go into any big city and get "SFX broadcasting" on a radio station and not call signals.. and hear awfull one off songs by no name advertising bands... no wonder cd sales and audiences are down
Speaking of DJs, I was getting gas today, listening to Mix 96.5 and to my surprise I heard PAUL "CUBBY" BRYAN??? I remember he used to be on 104 KRBE but then went to NY and became the lead DJ for one of the highest rating stations, cant remember the exact station and now he is back in Houston? Can anyone explain?
They need to change their format as well. Alternative sucks and should have disapeared a long time ago. The Houston radio industry is among the lamest in the country. We need a really good metal station like KISS 99.5 in San Antonio & KEGL 97.1 in Dallas. KLOL 101.1 just doesn't cut it. Too much repetition.
i think he is still in NYC and just "phoning" in his show from there. Sorta like when Carson Daly was a "DJ" for Mix 96.5 a few years ago.
Steve Robinson was at that station for a long long time. He began as an intern (or some other low level position) way back when it was 107.5 "something" (pre-Buzz days). I sort of knew Steve for a while. He had a long term relationship with a girl who lived across the street from me. They moved to Houston together when I lost touch, but they had planned to get married till the relationship went bad. Thanks again for those tickets Steve. I had a great time.
Steve Robinson, a graduate of Cypress Creek. He played Tight End. He went to Texas Tech. Steve was my favorite DJ in the afternoon before he moved to the mornings. I think Steve was the producer.
Their selection of music is really, really bad. I'd find it hard to just blame the djs. I mean, they play waaaayyy too much 'old' alternative stuff. It's hard to take it seriously when they keep talking about 'New Buzz Music' on the promos, followed up by a block of "Evenflow", "Heart Shaped Box", etc. I like that music, don't get me wrong, but...come on. Let's move a little farther out of the early 90s every once and awhile.
