I don't know if this has been posted here before. I would love to know what they are talking about (specially Morey and Cuban) because I only understand half of it, but I can sense that some of the things are very interesting...

    The video

Sorry if the thread is repeated.

I was laughing when Darryl said that Carrol Dawson asked him that if DM knew what players to take in the draft because he was clueless. That explains alot of the Rockets pre Morey draft picks.

I swear Rudy T had a major hand in most of those picks. His obsession with shooters led to so many wasted drafts.

    Mirsad Turkan, anyone?
    Boki?

Really awesome video. I think Morey held his tongue more than I would have liked, but all in all it was entertaining. Good find. +1

The contrast is striking between the starry eyed Cuban who buys into all of these magic formulas, measuring psychology and clutch stats and injury likelihood, and Morey who has a much more grounded view about the limitations of statistics. You could see the skepticism is Morey's demeanor about some of the claims Cuban was making.

Morey only relies on models with proven results.

Yeah, because the Morey has successfully led a team to a championship...?

Face it, Morey is very good but we over-worship him.

Watching that panel banter back and forth was an hour well worth spending. Morey seemed to be hanging back a bit. Considering the other guys on the stage, I can't say as I blame him. One of the things I enjoyed? Seeing Cuban in a setting like that. I have to admit that he came off as pretty knowledgeable. He kept kidding around with Morey about getting his secret spells and incantations, and really has a sense of humor. Les better keep Dork Elvis happy, or Cuban's apt to try and steal him from the Rocks. (mostly kidding!) They all seemed to have a genuine regard for each other, which nice to see.

i know a lot of people hate mark cuban for his antics during games but he really seems like a cool humble person in interviews. He keeps giving morey props on how he's smarter and wont reveal his secrets. heh..

It actually was posted before (by yours truly):

    http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?p=5193712#post5193712

But there still are some nice comments in this thread about the conference.

I definitely enjoyed hearing about the various case studies that each of them brought up, whether it was football or basketball.

It was also interesting to note that Mark Cuban was also pursuing Kevin Martin even while the Kings said they were not trading him.

As for the draft; a lot of Morey's reputation is from finding gems/undervalued players quite late in the draft. My opinion is that the further he moves up the draft, the less impressed we will be by his pick because most teams would pick those same prospects. If he picked a Budinger or Landry at #14, I'm not sure I would be very impressed. Given Morey's track record, I am sort of expecting a tier 2/3 star... i.e. not a Lebron/Wade/Kobe, but rather a Melo/Granger/Ginobili type guy (of course it doesn't have to be a wing player, those were just the examples that came to mind).

Anyway, I am keeping my feet grounded when it comes to the draft.

    Anchel:
The linked thread has a convenient post by durvasa which summarizes some main points from the conference in text form, if that would help you understand the stuff better (maybe put it into Google Translate)

a few things i found interesting. first lewis jokingly introducing morey as "the owner of this conference"..some serious man love for morey there...

my impression is lewis and simmon really seem to look up to morey and are always digging him for numbers.

i came away very impressed with polian, dude seems to know what he is talking about. the whole interviewing a players grade school and middle teachers and coaches, i found very interesting. he seems to have a really good handle on the psyche evaluations...replaying the whole 4th down situations, down to players in the game and those injured, coaching tendencies,momentum... shows how complex things can get..its not just 4th and 2

good to know morey is involved in these type of things, and just soaking in all the good information/ideas from really smart people, and he's on our side :)
