What elements of Patterson's game give the Rockets a new dynamic?

Based on very limited summer league minutes I saw, I've started thinking about what Patterson adds versus a starter like Luis Scola. He seems to have the ability to stretch the court out the the three point line. He can play above the rim. He seems to be a little bit stronger with his picks for plays like the pick and roll.

Basically, X's and O's wise, what can we do with Patrick in the lineup that we cannot do with Luis?

right now. just a little face-up postgame, a few spot up 3s and a oop or two. Scola is still way ahead of him in everything else.

Like Morey said, he won't get much PT this year unless he forces the team to play him more with solid minutes. Maybe a Landry type of rookie season at best.

That makes sense to some degree, but Morey doesn't determine minutes. I'm thinking more along the lines of what he can bring to the team when Adelman decides to play him. What kind of situations would make the coaches think he's the right guy for that play or two? For instance, Luis is not the best defender against guys that shoot over the top of him. Would Patrick be able to play these guys any differently? Does he have quicker feet and can defend further out?

Although a good post defender, Chuck Hayes in the game means a disadvantage on O. I think what PP can offer is:

    1) Spacing capability

    2) Solid D and O. He's the most well rounded forward we have, Hayes gives up a lot on O and Scola gives up some on D. When Scola sits down I'd rather have PP coming in than Hayes or Jeffries or Hill.

The only point he can do better than Luis is the ability to shoot the 3s. In all other regions, he needs to work hard to earn some minutes. For the first year, I don't think we can expect anything great from him except his ability to shoot the long ranges. Luis can easily score by postmove under the basket while patterson needs to work way more.

He is very strong. Isn't he?
It is his strength what Luis\Anderson\Hill doesn't have.
I think Chuck should teach him some defence skills. Maybe the next Howard!

Another 10 lbs of muscle and PP would look like Karl Malone strong. When they say PP is a man, they meant both emotionally and physically. By comparison, Hill looks like a weakly. Hill needs to get with the program and get much stronger.

Way too early to tell, really. As of right now, he could be a flop like Joey Dorsey, or he could eventually become the next Karl Malone (uh, playing style wise only). Nobody knows.

the only thing he have over Scola is that extra couple of ft in his shots. He have a lot of things he need to work on until can start to eat some of Scola's minutes. Especially when it comes to rebounding.

I watched all the our summer league games and this is what I saw from his time on the court...

Im guessing DM loves PP because he is a very efficient player, can score from almost anywhere on the floor, has a very high bball IQ, seems coachable and has an NBA ready body. He is a little weak on the defensive side of the ball and doesnt really seem to have any dominant attribute; except for being c**k strong.

One thing I did notice was he stood around the three point line a little too often. To be fair to PP, he did mention trying to get used to stretching his game out to the NBA three point line. IMO, this is a positive thing. Most rookies come in trying to show there strengths while PP used the summer league for what its for, improving other aspects of his game.

With all this being said, I think he will be a contributor this year in limited minutes.

he was projected to have great anticipation skills and intangibles such as Hayes, Scola and Batman.

For the start of the season, he adds another warm body to keep the bench warm for Yao's many frequent trips there. I expect he'll be a better player than I saw in Summer League when he finally makes significant minutes. It depends on what the Rockets work on to tell how he'll impact the Rockets after the mid-season point.

Patrick Patterson is the most well rounded PF we have? You're basing that off of a handful of summer league games, only one in which he dominated?

he pick and rolls to the basket harder and better than most bigs in the game already today, Kevin McHale also said it during one of the summer games.. hes strong and physical on both ends has a high motor and if he continues to work hard on his jumper he will spread the floor and open the paint when Pat and Miller are at the 4 & 5 spots, it will be cuts to the basket all day for Ariza, Bud, AB and Kmart... this team is being overlooked but we are going to be bery good this year

his 3 pt shot for sure.

scola can somewhat stretch the defense but patterson can extend it past the three point arc. im looking forward to this dynamic duo at the pf positon.

also i really hope the chuckwagon still gets some playing time.

I know you meant well, but please, the last thing we need is a tall 3 point shooter like Cook. Even Morey has gone on record saying he wants PP to develop/polish his inside game.

BTW, nice Horry pic. Good times.

and the ability to run the floor and finish, block shots, will have better defense than scola his rookie year and already has a shot just as good.

i like the ice cream man, though, pp will be our starting pf in a season or two
